The COVID-19 pandemic has brought home the invaluable role of volunteers, both in helping to manage the physical centres of testing and vaccination, and to support things like food and medicine distribution for the needy, or just being there for isolated people to talk to, or to walk dogs for the sick.
Now, as the pandemic looks set to wane in the mid-future, people are asking what is next, and Research for the Future could well be a top option. It's an NHS-supported initiative encouraging everyone in Greater Manchester to get involved in health research and help discover new ways to prevent, diagnose and manage illnesses.
"People who get involved in research tend to have better health outcomes, as they become better at managing their own condition" states the organisation "Joining the research community means you're also actively helping to improve care and treatments for you and for other people."
Anyone aged over 18 is invited to join welcome to join the project, whether they have a health condition or not, and joining also means you will receive information about research taking place in your area, along with details of how to take part – whether that be in study design, discussion groups, surveys, testing new equipment or clinical trials.
The team is particularly keen to hear from people living with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or respiratory disease, as they regularly have research opportunities related to those long term conditions.
