Swinton is set to be the epicentre of Euro culture next week as The Wood Rooms gets set to livestream classical and folk music concerts from the east and west of Europe in a free programme of sounds produced by Góbéfest, described as "the UK's only free weekend-long festival to celebrate the music, dance, culture, food and drink of the legendary region of Transylvania"...
Quite. The Fest starts next Sunday, 28th February at 3pm, when mezzo soprano Elizabeth Silló and Wales-born baritone Richard Parry will, along with pianist Dorothy Singh, perform a set taking in both Hungarian and Welsh folk songs, including Sosban fach (Welsh), Tavaszi szel (Hungarian) and A jo lovas katonanak (Hungarian).
Two weeks later, on Sunday 14th March, Hungarian folk ensemble Folktone will be performing Ludwig Folk Beethoven live from The Wood Rooms, exploring the musical connection and the possible influence on each others' musical language of Beethoven and his Hungarian contemporary, gypsy violin virtuoso János Bihari.
Sunday 28th March sees double bassist and composer Michael Cretu and the Manchester International Roots Orchestra musicians perform original, Balkan Roma, and Middle Eastern/ Iranian songs live from The Wood Rooms, and Sunday 11th April sees Jonathan Ellis live from The Wood Rooms, performing a selection from Liszt Ferenc Hungarian rhapsodies, Bartok Bela, including Evening with the Szekelys and Strauss' Hungarian dances.
