As reported recently in the Salford Star*, local elections will go ahead on May 6th, despite worries from some councils.
Cabinet Office Minister Chloe Smith has today said that the elections will be held "in a safe and secure way" with "additional funding for councils, and practical changes to electoral laws to help both voters and candidates.
"Democracy should not be cancelled because of COVID" she added "More than ever, local people need their say as we build back better, on issues ranging from local roads, to safer streets, to the level of council tax. As the Government rolls out the vaccine to the most vulnerable, we will be able to leave lockdown and open our country up safely again. We will work with political parties to ensure that these important elections are free and fair."
The Government is handing local councils a share of £13million for plastic screens in polling stations and hand sanitiser, while people will be asked to bring their own pens and wear masks when voting in person. People who are shielding will be encouraged to vote by post.
On 6th May elections are due to take place for all sixty Salford City Council seats, plus for Salford City Mayor and Greater Manchester Mayor.
