While a flood alert is still in force in the River Irwell catchment area of Salford, at this afternoon's GM Leaders' press conference Nick Bailey, Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, told the Salford Star that there was no "significant or severe risk" of flooding in the city...
"It is a reduced risk but there still may be high levels of water where in pockets there will be an overflow, even from the basin which has been created as a contingency" he said "But in terms of how that has been rated from the Environment Agency, that has not been created as a significant or severe risk but obviously that means it will be managed locally by the local authority and if necessary there will be support from the local fire and policing teams."
At 5pm this evening, the Irwell measured 4.12metres at the Littleton Road 'Manchester Racecourse' monitoring station, well above this morning's level but still well below the highest recorded level at around 5.8metres.
The main threat from flooding in Greater Manchester was in Sale and Didsbury, with Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, urging people who need to leave their homes to do so, without being in breach of the COVID-19 lockdown (see graphic)
