SALFORD SEND FREE SCHOOL TO OPEN IN WEASTE

Star date: 30th December 2020 NEW SEND FREE SCHOOL TO BE CREATED IN WEASTE Despite apparently being against free schools in principle, Salford City Council has successfully bid for a new fifty place free school for 11 to 16 year olds with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The school, to be run by Kings Academy Trust, is to be sited on Kintyre Avenue in Weaste, rather than on the site of the former St Luke's Primary School which is now set for housing. Just over two years ago, the Salford Star revealed that Salford City Council had produced a Free School Strategy which would be "encouraging free school applications, from endorsed proposers, to support the requirement for additional school places in key areas of the city where the need is clearly proven." This, despite free schools being one of former Prime Minister Theresa May's pet policies, as they are out of the control of local authorities, and they can set their own curriculum and admission policies, employ non-qualified teachers and are basically unaccountable to anyone but the Government. At the time, the teachers' union told the Salford Star that it was not "entirely comfortable" with the decision "because we do reject the free school philosophy". However, with Government policy stating that local authorities cannot open new schools, the union wouldn't condemn the strategy (see previous Salford Star article – click here) Now, in a couple of weeks, Salford City Council is set to endorse a new fifty place free school in the city for 11 to 16 year olds with special educational needs and disabilities, or SEND, specifically catering for those with Autism and Emotional/ Behavioural Disorders (ASC/EBD). The free school, to be called the Acorn Academy, was approved by the Government in November, will be run by the Kings Academy Trust and will open in 2021/22. It will be built on Kintyre Avenue in Weaste, rather than the originally earmarked site at the former St Luke's Primary School, which will now be transferred to the Council by the Manchester Diocesan Board of Education for social housing. "It was proposed that the former St Luke's Primary School would be refurbished to provide the new SEND school, however the building has been found to be an unfeasible proposition for refurbishment and the site not ideal for reuse as a Special School given its proximity to main roads and the Metrolink tramway" states the Council report "...The location of the St Luke's site is potentially better suited to residential development given its prominent main road frontage..."

| Its a shame that you never got set on in the pits grammar school lad you would have found out that we had the safest coal mines in the world brought about and fought for by my union the national union of mine workers after the mines were Nationalised and were taken off the likes Andrew Knowles who owned many mines in the Irwell Valley and who did not give much thought to safety or the welfare of the miners. It is true that Tony Benn closed mines when he was energy minister however the mines that were closed were closed with and after consultation and agreement with the NUM the miners and communities after pits were worked out or to dangerous to continue mining he also invested in the Selby super pit complex in Yorkshire. Tony Benn gave the miners in the great strike for pits jobs and communities in 1984 100 per cent support in trying to save the pits and the mining communities from thatchers butchery of the industry i went to many rallys and meetings with him in attendance he was a man of great integrity.i suffered injury in my mining career like many others however it was a very worthwhile and rewarding job and if at the time no body worked the mines what a mess we would have been in and of course other jobs were available to do no one was forced to work in coal mines my dad spent 35 years underground and he his still fit at 81 and i know like my self we would be back down Agecroft pit like a shot if we had our time again and i know many other former miners who feel the same.I will just clarify once again i am against all tests to gain access to education at any age 11 plus or any other ways of streaming or of writing children off for the benefit of the class system all children should be given a first class education every person can offer something to society each person will have a skill or talent or vocation and each person should be given the opportunity to live in a society that delivers education for all for education is a right not a privilege.And thatcher deserve no credit for any off her works of destruction a war criminal and one of the most no good twisted bastards to walk this land the truth will one day come out about thatcher. |

| It was the idea of public schoolboy and Oxbridge army officer Tony Crosland to get rid of grammar schools.He was education minister under Labour.Before he could close them,there was an election and the Tory party got in. Maggie was the education minister. She thought closing grammar schools down was a good idea,especially as she had to pay out lots of good money to get her thick son educated at Harrow.Maggie closed more grammar schools than anyone else. Since Paul Kelly says grammar schools are evil places,can he not give the old rat bag a bit of good praise for this one wonderful deed? While he is at it, can he also give a bit of condemnation to Wedgie Benn, that great hero of socialism? Old wedgie closed more mines than Thatcher did when he was energy minister, and put more miners on the dole than she did.I wasted my grammar school education,but I got enough O levels to get a good electrical apprenticeship.During the recession early seventies,I applied to get retrained as a colliery electrician, as I had mates who worked down the pit. Because I had previous experiance as a spark,safety rules meant they couldn't take me. I am glad they didn't, my 2 pals died early, probably due to working down the mines. |

| @PaulKelly - its obvious you go to bed every night an angry man - still reliving life 30 years ago. However - since Maggie and Major we had a Labour government for 13 years. We've had a Labour council in Salford for 47 years. There is no 11plus in Salford - times have moved on. Our children's life outcomes are in a large part dictated by the education they receive - which in Salford is pretty poor and very much below the national average. So can you please tell me why our children receive such a poor education in comparison with others? I would have thought that after the 47 years security of tenure that Labour have enjoyed - we would have had a socialist utopia -- This is obviously not the case - high crime, poor health outcomes, poor life expectancy, poor educational outcomes, poor economic and social mobility. Haven't Labour done well ! ahhh but its all those nasty Tories fault isn't it. Making all those horrible rules, regulations and laws that Labour governments don't bother reversing or amending when they have their turn in power. So -- i ask again -- just what have Salford Labour done to improve education in Salford ? why are our schools delivering such poor standards after a 47 year free run in power? |

| What is amazing is that the 11 plus is still being used to condemn children as winners or losers Maggie and co were supporters of the 11 plus and her education minister Kenneth baker rail roaded the national; curriculum act 1988 through with out the consultation of teachers or teaching unions the tories did this on ideological grounds so they could divide working class people and impose the ruling ideas the ideas of the ruling class and thus putting teachers in to straight jacket teaching confined to teaching within the narrow confines of ruling class history the maintaining of the status quo and the undermining and ridiculing of the arts and social sciences.The 11 plus exam was and is a disgraceful way of deciding who is clever so called or not so clever to attend grammar school and then consequently university the misery this iniquity has caused to many young people and families that is the young kids deemed thick is incalculable its a dog eat dog system wasteful and creates injustice in society. The man behind the 11 plus exam Cyril Burt falsified research lied and put forward the nonsense that intelligence was inherited from parents and had nothing to do with social conditions music to Baker and Thatchers ears Thatcher and Baker have gone the 11 plus is still here still creating division and misery for many happiness for others. The 11 plus should be confined to history along with grammar and private schools and a fully free comprehensive more rounded education system should be available to all regardless of class to each there abilities to each there needs. The great railway engineer George Stephenson could not read or write he was the manager of Pendleton colliery whit lane his son Robert was the consulting engineer he could read and write how do you judge who is cleverer one mans idiot is a genius and another mans genius is an idiot all power to the imagination.And give our children who need extra help all the support they need to lead happy lives. |

| These comprehensive schools that Paul Kelly goes on about and seems to like, does he not know it was all maggies idea when she was education minister?Maggie was a country bumpkin who went to a grammar school. It helped get her into Oxford and number 10.Maggie didn't like the idea of other bright bumpkins following her, and upsetting her public school lover boys,so she got rid of these elite grammar schools, and send all the kids to comprehensive schools so they could learn to be thick. This really gave a boost to the fee paying schools that were declining at the time. All the tight arsed middle classes were happy to send there kids to grammar schools that were free. When comprehensives came in under Thatcher, if they had bright kids, they had to pay out to get them educated. What happens under comprehensives is, the better off move to an area where the comprehensives are good.If you are poor, and live in a shit area,even if you are as bright as Einstein, you go to a shit school.Good old maggie. |

The children with special needs should have the best education they should be schooled in wonderful palaces and the schools should be set in wonderful parks this is what is required so they can if possible be able to achieve there potential and prosper in society a society that nourishes and supports them so called free schools are not free they are profit driven and when they go bust which many do the poor kids are displaced and lose the stability they need. Really some of you philanthropists i am quite sure will blame Salford council for starting world war 2 next this myopia and parish out look must stop its bad for your health analyses cause and effect historical materialism yours is to ask why. |

| If Salford Council really cared about Salford residents - our schools would be centers of excellence rather than the NEET factories that they currently are. Just wait for an ex or current Councillor to pipe up about Maggie, Tory cuts, the miners or all school children should be made to read the Ragged Trousered Philanthropist (a crap book if ever there was one). Easy to blame someone else but 47 years of Labour Salford rule and educational accomplishments can be listed on the back of a postage stamp. |

| Of course Salford council like the idea of free schools.It means they cannot be blamed when all the kids turn out to be neets. There is another free school going on the Castle Irwell site that we talked about the other day. Ray knows all about it, but he wont let on because its a secret. I have heard good and bad things said about these schools, and to be honest, it is outside my field of knowledge. What I do know,is that there is one in London whose headteacher is Katherine Birbalsingh. This lady is a real demon according to the lefties and the teachers unions, she gets them all going.The thing is though, she gets fantastic results from all her kids who come from a very poor area.The kids and their parents love her. Being outside Salford council control cannot be a bad idea,being outside our Tory government control as well would be even better. The tories like our state schools to be neet factories, they don't send their kids to them,and neither does Corbyns former fancy piece Old Mother Abbott. |
