WH SMITH EXCITEMENT IN SALFORD

Star date: 29th May 2010

CAN WE CONTAIN OUR JOY IN SALFORD?

Oh my word! Oh my Lord! Oh my gosh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!!! I nearly wet my knickers when I received the latest update from MediaCityUK… Yes, a company that isn't backed with wads of cash from North West Development Agency is actually going to move into the place!

So which company is moving into MediaCityUK? Is it Google? Is it Disney Studios? Is it Pixar? Nah… To quote my MediaCity News bulletin "WHSmith is to open a kiosk"… How can we ever live with such excitement?

Click here for more knicker wetting joyous details of the deal…

WH SMITH KIOSK OPENS IN SALFORD IN 2011!!!

Break out the bubbly… Get the flags out… Call in the Mayor to open it… WH Smith is opening a kiosk at MediaCityUK. And Peel Media, which owns the place, actually sent out a press release about it. Apparently it's going to be selling "newspapers and magazines, stationery, books, confectionery and drinks".

Bryan Gray, Chairman of Peel Media, obviously couldn't contain his joy either as he commented… "WH Smith are a well-known high street brand and we are pleased that they will be serving the needs of visitors, residents and employees at MediaCityUK."

For those of a nervous disposition please look away now… but the kiosk is going to be 1000 square feet! That's just over 30feet x 30feet! And one eightieth of the total retail and leisure space available in Phase 1 of MediaCityUK.

The kiosk will be located in the `open centre' so we will all be able to visit it too! I'm sure this is one of the reasons why Nicky Campbell has decided to re-locate to Salford… but he'll have to get in the queue for a job with Smiths… We were here first!

AS £5.5MILLION AVOIDED BY DEVELOPERS SALFORD MAYOR SAYS IT'S A 'MYTH'!

In the latest issue of Salford Council's propaganda mag, Life in Salford, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has denounced the "myth" that "developers don't contribute money to the city. It's simply not true" he says.

Yes, they do contribute some money but they also avoid millions of pounds in payments and provision of affordable housing. Indeed, Salford Star analysis shows that developers avoided almost £5.5million in payments last year, as the Mayor only tells half the truth.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS TO GET HUGE PAY RISES

Cash-strapped Salford City Council is to give huge pay rises to senior officers after a 'job evaluation exercise' moved them well up the pay scale. It follows the resignation of the Director of Finance and Corporate Business, and spreading the majority of his salary amongst other re-titled roles.

The Salford Star believes the officers are in line to share around £54,000 between them.
