During the protests around the Tory Party Conference, The People's Assembly is running a four day Shut Down The Tories Festival running between Saturday 28th September and Tuesday 1s October in a huge marquee in Piccadilly Gardens.
On Tuesday 1st October, between 2pm and 4pm, there's a panel discussion in the marquee titled How We Can Challenge The Mainstream Media with Ben Chacko from the Morning Star, and Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston...And as a prelude to the discussion there's the premier of the short, quirky film, Deathstar Supernova, made by Rafe Conn with a voiceover by Nigel Pivaro.
'The Salford Star is skint...Drastic action is required!' states the blurb as the film documents a month of benefit gigs, CDs, auctions and exhibitions, in which local artists, bands, volunteers and the community came together to save the Star.
On Saturday 28th October, from 7pm, as part of the People's Assembly Big Night Out (starring singer/songwriter David McAllister), another Rafe Conn film, Wayward Daughters and Renegade Sons, is being premiered, showing how senior citizens who had never been involved in protest before, became activists to save Boddan Lodge Over 60s Club in Monton from the axe by Salford City Council.
This twenty minute film shows members of the Club protesting, interspersed with interviews with national and local political figures showing how they became activists.
The Saturday at the Festival in the marquee also features a public meeting, Don't Attack Iran, organised by Stop The War and CND (2pm-4pm), the book launch of Chris Nineham's The British State: A Warning (5pm-6pm).
On Monday, 30th September, the Festival marquee hosts public meetings Unionising To Fight Austerity (3pm-5:30pm) organised by Artists Union England, Climate Change Needs System Change (5:45pm-7:15pm) with Extinction Rebellion and Youth Climate Strike, and NHS Not For Sale (7:30pm-9pm) with UNISON campaigners and activists.
Tuesday 1st October in the marquee also has a Protest Against Racist Boris Johnson public meeting (6pm-6:30pm), after a demonstration in St Peter's Square happening at 5pm.
The Shut Down The Tories Festival wraps itself around all the protests outside the Tory Party Conference, including the big national demonstration on Sunday 29th September – further details to follow...
