On Friday September 20th, there is to be a global Climate Strike called by school students and supported by climate activists and trade unions ahead of the UN Climate Summit in New York.
Following representations by Salford City UNISON, Salford Council is encouraging workers to take part in a walkout on that day between noon and 12:30pm. A memo sent to all staff this morning by the Council states..
"On 20 September between 12 noon and 12.30pm we will be supporting our trade unions who are taking part in a global day of action. Young climate activists are calling for everyone to join in encouraging people all over the world to walk out in support and halt 'business as usual'.
"Please join us on the civic centre lawns and let's continue to work together to make sure we do all we can to protect this planet" it adds "It is all our responsibility...We are part of a wider community that needs to work together. Unless organisations, businesses and the global community change their behaviour, we will reach 3°C level of change which will have irreversible and catastrophic consequences."
Following the staff walkout, many are expected to travel into Manchester to link up with a huge protest and march beginning at St Peter's Square from noon.
"If you wish to join the Manchester event on Friday afternoon please ensure that you request the time off in the usual way through your line manager, with the option to take unpaid leave subject to service needs being met" states the Council Lead Member for Workforce and Industrial Relations in the memo.
"We're now working to make it [Climate Strike] as big as possible and encouraging members in other organisations to ask for something similar" explains Salford UNISON "If you live in Salford and want to come along to show your support on the 20th, then it would be more than welcome."
The Climate Strike on 20th September will be followed by a week of global and local action until 27th September...
"This is not a single-generation job: it's humanity's job" states Greta Thunberg and 46 youth activists from the international school strike movement "Let's all join together, with your neighbours, co-workers, friends, family and go out on to the streets to make your voices heard and make this a turning point in our history."
