Yesterday, councillors sitting on the Planning Panel of Salford City Council rejected proposals by Bellway Homes to build 209 houses on Hilton Lane in Little Hulton, the former playing field of St George's RC High School.
The original application was deferred firstly in May, then was up again on 4th July but deferred "due to some documents on the electronic planning file not publishing to the website".
54 objections were received from members of the local community, including on the grounds of pollution from more cars, traffic congestion, over development of the area and wildlife worries.
In May, the application was deferred by councillors who wanted 'clarification...on the accuracy of the traffic data used to inform the Traffic Assessment' and for more discussion on 'the mitigation proposed as part of the Section 106 obligation'.
While the Section 106 package was subsequently amended, officers stood by the original "up to date and robust" traffic assessments, which "demonstrate that the impact upon the highway network is not considered to be severe".
Officers also considered that almost £500,000 of Section 106 monies towards traffic calming, improved public transport provision, cycling and walking facilities would "help to lower the use of the private car"...
Following some frantic discussions and Planning Lead Member Councillor Derek Antrobus recommending approval, the proposal was rejected after Councillor Bob Clarke moved refusal.
