SALFORD SECOND WORST POLLUTED CITY IN THE UK

Exposure to PM2.5s shouldn't exceed 10 micrograms per cubic metre of air but Salford has 15, second only to Glasgow and joint with London. Over a year ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) produced statistics that showed Salford's air quality, as measured in PM2.5 pollution, was the joint second worst in England. Now, new WHO figures show that the air quality in the city is still the second worst in the UK, worse than Manchester and equal to London. The WHO measured tiny particles known as PM2.5s which are emitted from vehicles, power plants, wood burning and dust from demolition and building work, that get stuck deep in the lungs. Illnesses associated with PM2.5s include strokes, heart disease, cancer and asthma. Exposure to PM2.5s shouldn't exceed 10 micrograms per cubic metre of air but Salford has 15, second only to Glasgow (16) and Scunthorpe (16), and joint with London (15), Leeds (15), Eastbourne (15) and Southampton (15). Manchester had a score of 13. Salford's PM2.5 air quality reading hasn't moved since the last WHO report in May 2016. In 2015, a report by Public Health England showed that 138 people over the age of 25 died in the city from causes associated with PM2.5 pollution (see previous Salford Star article – click here). These latest WHO figures, reported in The Lancet, showed 44 out of 51 British towns and cities had failed air quality safety tests on PM2.5s. "The Government is spectacularly failing to get a grip on air pollution" says Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party "It is not surprising that 44 of 51 UK cities have air so dirty it breaks health limits. Only bold policies will tackle this public health emergency and yet the Government has sunk thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money trying to defend its illegally poor plans in the courts. We need urgent action to save lives across the UK, including a rapid transition to zero-emission city centres and a new Clean Air Act fit for the 21st century."

Did not mention me at age 11 being raped by a leading Labour Councillor then the Labour MP telling my parents to hush it up about the man for the sake of the miners union and the Labour Party. National news now having Labour to answer for how decades of oppression has given bad dominance instead of justice. | Good words from @DirtyOld. My first girlfriend 50 years ago came from Scunthorpe. I took her home and my parents in Doncaster said no way was I to match up with a Scunthorpe family. Yet Loraine was great fun, we met at their fairground on the Waltza. My parents were poor coal miners family but had a hate for a town they had never seen, just newspaper reports. I say look at the people. Here in Salford put people before party politics and give the people the truth, the options and make us a Salford clean, eco superior City and the best home in England. | Salford will always be a dirty polluted place.we all know who to blame. When I was a kid, Salford had a good council who were the first in Europe to pass clean air laws. I remember the choking filth of the smog before then, and the cleaner air after. With regards the idea that MJF has, of shoving a few solar panels on roofs, well about 5 years ago, the best eco architect in this country, An OBE recipient no less, did an eco scheme for housing on the crescent police station site, it was for about 60 dwellings , a third of which for social housing. It would have cost Salford council nothing. They were given that site free by the government. Just think, 20 free social housing dwellings. Salford council did not want to know. They turned it down. An electrical contractor, a friend of mine ,was involved. He was gutted when it did not go ahead. This is the truth.I myself have seen the preliminary computer ideas, they were on a cd. I will see if I can get a copy if the star are interested. So MJF, forget any ideas of putting any good ideas forward, the clowncil just do not want to know. With regards that other filthy town with dirty air, Scunthorpe, well I was there only today, I know people there. Well at least they have an excuse, they have a massive steel factory there, huge place, but I can tell you , the council there look after the ordinary people ok. |

| Gareth makes good sense. I feel clean energy will help. Let us showcase one community starting in Langworthy with free Solar panels for residents and 280 new Social Housing units there for local people using the best clean energy systems in partnership with the design unit at Salford University. I am certain £45million technology investment grants into Langworthy will ring the bells of happiness for 280 local families each year. All we need is the courage to showcase social housing fit for modern living. |

| Probably all the shit and hot air from Felse. I urge the Salfordstar to do an article on Felse, write down all his many demands and then stop him commenting on the site. I appreciate that you have been giving him plenty of rope for him to prove himself an idiot and he just keeps on hanging himself, but surely it is time to put a stop to the demanding Felse? |

| I see need for urgent action. We must call time on air pollution before we are unable to stop the pending doom. I demand real action not words from Salford City Council. Salford is our home and we expect to live long and healthily with all our loved ones. |
