Fields in Trust, a charity formerly known as the National Playing Fields Association, runs an annual award to find the public's favourite green space. This year, Victoria Park in Swinton has been nominated in the North West category, alongside some of the most well known parks in the region, and it needs Salford people to vote for it before 3rd November to stand a chance of being recognised nationally.
All people have to do is go to the website – click here – and scroll down to Victoria Park...click on 'Vote Now' and just put in an email address to verify the vote. It's very easy to do.
The citation for Victoria Park on the Fields in Trust website says it all really... "It's a fab place, despite Salford Council's cutbacks. Stunning original Victorian bandstand and bowling green, used by everyone and four generations of my family, picnics and a play area. We used to have band performances, tai chi and warden walks - no more as cut backs saw to that, but still an amazing space..."
The Fields in Trust UK's Best Park Award exists to highlight and champion parks and green spaces and, since the charity was founded, in 1925, it has protected over 2,700 sites, including playgrounds, playing fields, and formal and informal parkland totalling 30,000 acres of land across the UK. They are also good for your health...
"On average, the more frequently park or green space trips are made, the higher an individual's wellbeing" states the Trust "The most practical and effective use of an individual's time would be to visit their local park or green space at least once a week to gain most of the health and wellbeing benefits. This results in a recommended 'dosage' for parks and green space: if it is 'five a day' for fruit and veg then it is 'once a week' for parks..."
The public vote runs until the 3rd November. The top park in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be shortlisted before the winner is announced at the Fields in Trust Awards Ceremony at Lord's Cricket Ground on 29th November.
