This year's Frank Mullineux Local History Award has been won by Paul Speakman for The Queen Cometh, his study of the visit of Queen Victoria to the city...
"The Queen Cometh gave a detailed account of the visit of Queen Victoria to the local area in 1851" says Paul Hassall of Salford Local History Forum, which presents the Award
"It explains the thorough preparations, the events during the visit and the feelings of the Queen, taken from the Royal Archives" he adds "It is an extensive and lavishly illustrated work. In the opinion of the Awards Panel it is 'An excellent, original publication rich in interesting well-researched details'."
The prize of an ornate certificate and selection of drawings from Harold Riley was presented to Paul Speakman by John Blackburn of Salford Reds Foundation, which sponsors the award, at the Salford Histories Festival on 30th September.
This year, eight entries were received which ranged from published books, to dissertations and a local history trail. Mike Corless was also Highly Commended for the Walkden Heritage Trail.
The annual Award is in the memory of Frank Mullineux for his contribution to local history and entries can be publications, essays, research, an exhibition or anything at all which promotes the study of local history or contributes to knowledge of local history in some way.
Entry is via an application form and must be received by 30th June in any year.
