Tributes have been pouring in following the death of Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn after a battle against emphysema. Liz, who lived in Higher Broughton for many years, played Vera Duckworth for over three decades, and was one of the most popular characters ever to grace the Street.
"We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn" her family says in a statement today "Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her. She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing."
A statement from Granada TV, on behalf of all those who worked on Coronation Street, adds: "It is with the greatest sadness that we have learned our beloved Liz Dawn has passed away last night. Her family at Coronation Street are heartbroken.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy at this very sad time to Liz's devoted husband Don, her loving children Graham, Dawn, Ann and Julie, their families and her six grandchildren and three great grandchildren" the statement added
"We have been blessed to have Liz in our lives, as she was such a kind, considerate and caring friend and colleague. As Coronation Street's Vera Duckworth for 34 years, Liz brought so much joy and happiness to so many. She was a wonderful actress who will forever be a true Coronation Street legend."
And Coronation Street's Executive Producer, Kieran Roberts, says: ""Liz Dawn was a true Coronation Street legend, a brilliant actor and a wonderful person. Everyone lucky enough to have worked with Liz during her thirty-four years playing Corrie icon Vera Duckworth will remember her with huge affection."
Salford's Joanne Kingston, who worked on Coronation Street press, wrote two books on the soap and edited the fan magazine, remembers Liz with much fondness...
"Liz was a lovely warm lady who was really well liked by all the cast and crew" she says "During the time I worked at Granada she was always really kind to me, and also to all her fans.
"When Jack and Vera ran the Rovers Return, new cast members were always in awe of going into the pub and seeing them behind the bar because so many people related to the characters for such a long time. But despite being famous, throughout all the years she worked on the programme, she never lost her down to earth approach."
