Salford City Council and its Jeremy Corbyn supporting City Mayor, Paul Dennett, could have a big strike on its hands if it decides to close The Grange, Salford's only residential home for disabled children.
Dennett and his Cabinet will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to decide the fate of The Grange, and the families of children at the care home, plus Salford City UNISON, have called a protest lobby of the Mayor from 9am at Salford Civic Centre in Swinton.*
This evening, UNISON, which represents Salford Council workers, upped the ante by releasing the results of its consultative ballot of members in Children's Residential Services...
On a 70.7% turnout, 91.3% were in favour of a formal ballot for action. 91.3% were also in favour of action, including strike action; and 91.3% were in favour of action, short of strike action.
The union also passed an emergency motion opposing the closure of The Grange, which noted; "The opposition of children, parents, staff and all other social work and health professionals to the closure: The failure of the Council to engage in meaningful consultation with staff: That the closure of The Grange will put our members at risk of compulsory redundancy..."
The UNISON motion also stated that it believes...
* That a Labour Council that finds money for renting commercial premises at the cost of millions of pounds, that is having to spend over a million a year to keep Salford Stadium afloat can afford better services for those with disabilities.
* That Salford Council should be uniting the people of Salford against austerity and this illegitimate Tory Government rather than implement it.
And resolved to....
* Formally ballot our members for industrial action against redundancies.
* Consider balloting other members within the City Council to support our members in Residential Services.
* Continue to campaign with parents and other stakeholders for the best possible services for children with disabilities.
