The Sandells are a three piece alt psychedelic rock band, featuring Tim Lyons of The Things on bass and vocals, Johann Kloos of Erick on guitar, and Brian Benson of Abstract Dawn on drums.
Next Saturday, 29th July, the Salford band launch their daring debut album, Forwards! at Gullivers in Manchester with a live gig, and support from electro duo Factory Acts and alt rockers Shaking Chains.
The album, mastered by Simon 'Ding' Archer, who has collaborated with The Fall, P J Harvey and most recently Cabbage, has nine tracks that range in style from the rich, gnarling, twisted guitars of the track Reach (Version 2), to the galloping garage of Cowboys Don't Have Brollies, to the ten minute experiential meanderings of NAC, to the psychedelic experimental soundings of Voight Kampff, which whiffs of very, very, very early Alice Cooper before the Killer and School's Out...
"From my perspective, Forwards! was a necessary album to make" says Higher Broughton's Johann Kloos "The title says a lot about the progressive/propelling nature of the music; its roots in the avant garde and the underground music scene. The Sandells are essentially a meeting of three creative minds pushing each other 'forwards' to make music that is real and has resonance and power."
It's an album that, at home, will satisfyingly annoy the neighbours, and one that will go down well, live, in sweaty basement clubs.
"The reason for Forwards! is to create something different and of a standard par excellence!" explains Lower Broughton's Tim Lyons "The record is an alternative to all the boring indie stuff that sounds like it was all recorded in the same place, using the same equipment by the same people..."
Forwards! is not only The Sandells' debut album, it's also the first release from Salford-based Red Rec Records, which in its previous incarnation as promoters staged gigs by Wreckless Eric and Section 25, amongst others.
"To my mind, this album is the best thing I've heard from Salford since the Happy Mondays" says John Pickford of Red Rec Records "There is a range and depth to it which makes it the kind of record you want to listen to again and again. It's like a great Lowry painting: so much rich detail, imagery and atmosphere; humour's in the mix too. Red Rec would love to release more of The Sandells' music and is aiming to release more local left-field gems in the near future. Watch this space..."
