This Friday, 28th April, sees hustings for Greater Manchester Mayor candidates titled 'What About The Environment?' jointly hosted by Frack Free Greater Manchester, Campaign against Climate Change, Friends of the Earth, Global Justice Manchester and GM Environment Forum.

Four of the candidates have confirmed their attendance - Sean Anstee, Conservative; Jane Brophy, LibDem; Andy Burnham, Labour; and Will Patterson, Green. And each will be making statements and answering questions on where they stand on environmental issues such as...

What can be done to tackle climate change and keep our homes safe from flooding?
How will we power our homes and businesses, and do we want fracking in Greater Manchester?
What can be done to protect nature and green spaces from development?
How do we deal with the air pollution crisis, and what does that mean for how we get around?

"It hasn't featured much in the Mayoral campaign so far, but the environment is something that affects us all" says Ali Abbas, Manchester Friends of the Earth co-ordinator "The new Mayor will face a number of key challenges, from cleaning up our toxic air to making rapid cuts in carbon emissions to protecting our precious green spaces. We look forward to hearing what the candidates will do to make Greater Manchester a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live."

Judy Paskell from the Campaign against Climate Change adds: "Climate change is one of the most urgent issues affecting our children's future. People in Salford and elsewhere in Greater Manchester have already suffered from severe flooding, a sign of things to come.

"If the Northern Powerhouse is to mean anything, the new Greater Manchester Mayor must use all their powers and influence to protect our region from flooding, and to reduce the region's carbon footprint by promoting cheaper, greener public transport, better insulated houses and  local renewable energy schemes."

If you haven't been invited then get on to them and get yourself invited???? I doubt the organisers are on here to read your complaint? If you are going along just to complain about the GMSF, but bear in mind that if you have it scrapped, then that is more opportunity for the speculative developers to run riot as greater manchester will not have a plan. Dont ask them to scrap it..ask them to change it.

Is this another Anti-democratic hustings where all the candidates have not been invited?

The only reason 4 have confirmed attendance is that only 4 have been invited. The one candidate who has recently been on a protest against building on green belt land, who is also against fraud as not been invited, that candidate being myself.

It should be noted that Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party were all complicit in bringing the fracking industry to Barton Moss, whilst the Green Party supported the Community Protection Camp, the daily protests and the huge Solidarity Sunday events

I think this will be a testing hustings for the candidates. It will show their concern for our future health and for the preservation of our environment. It will also show how much they understand these major issues. Their policies will be the deciding factors for me.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
