Ladies and gentlemen...Welcome to the tenth annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards which will be running on-line throughout the festive season. The judges have been hard at work this year ploughing through hundreds of well deserving nominees – companies, politicians and councils who have made 2016 just a little less bearable for us Salford residents.
If readers could dress formally, sip a glass of warm white wine and politely applaud at the end of the citation it would be much appreciated.
So now...it's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to meet the muppets on the Salford Star Mary Burns Award Show!

Goes to...
HAZEL BLEARS
Yes, first down the sticky red carpet this year is the former Salford and Eccles MP, poster girl for the MPs' expenses scandal and now far, far away from Parliament stuffing her pockets from other sources.
In 2015, and on top of her MP's pension, Hazel scooped a job as a Member-Nominated Director of the Co-operative Group after a controversial vote at the organisation's Annual General Meeting. The role carried a basic fee of £60,000 a year for `a minimum of approximately one to two days a month' (see here).
Hazel, we understand, overlooks the retail division as part of her two-day-a-month slog – the very same retail division that opened its new shop on Chapel Street, almost next to Mo's convenience store, to try to put the retailer, who has served the community for over thirty years, out of business (see here).
This year, Hazel had landed a further job at the Social Investment Business, which pays a reported £25,000 for three days work per month (see previous Salford Star article - click here). On announcing her attainment of the post, Hazel said "I am determined to make sure money can go where it is needed most"...Yep, in Hazel's handbag...
That's a total of £85,000 a year for around five days work per month. Nice work if you can get it!
