The activities of SAYF, or St Ambrose Young Families, vary from childcare, to adult learning, to family fun events and volunteering opportunities. Based on Cholmondeley Road in Weaste, the project has been running since 1994, "as a direct result of social and economic problems", it states.
Now that work has been rewarded further, as the Big Lottery fund has handed SAYF £397,235 for a further five years work at the centre and beyond...
"One of the main strengths of SAYF is our excellent 22 year track record of consulting and involving all ages" says project manager Jackie Lloyd "SAYF's research on what families need has included expert advice; the experts being the residents' voices of all ages. This research has enabled SAYF to develop a future five year plan.
"This plan outlines the need to build on our existing work at the SAYF centre and expand into the neighbouring wards" she explains "SAYF's work will help to narrow the gap in terms of access to opportunities within Salford and will contribute to the economic inclusion of local residents and the growth of the economic development of the areas in which they live.
"SAYF believes that by providing activities and support, not just at our centre but by developing a new outreach project, we will continue to improve the wellbeing and skills of many more residents" she adds "In return this will help to stimulate ambition and drive amongst communities, strengthen families and reduce poverty long-term. It will be a challenge but it will also create a momentous opportunity for Salford residents, and the SAYF project."
