Upstairs at the Langworthy Cornerstone, there are eight small-ish oil portraits of tattooed people huddled together on the wall, looking out and challenging viewers' perceptions of community appearance.
Some look like those old Spanish Lady paintings that were mass produced in the Seventies, only wazzed up for the 21st Century, complete with piercings and skin art, and with laughter, rather than virginal mischief, in their eyes.
"The point is to show that we are all the same underneath our skin" says Salford artist Alexandra Campbell who created the portraits "We have all been through the same experiences in life, yet we are still judged when we look different, or we have tattoos.
"Individuals without tattoos or who don't look alternative are equally judged, but from plenty of personal experience, alternative and tattooed individuals are easily discriminated and my aim is to prove that, especially, alternative and tattooed individuals are no different to anybody else besides beautiful choices of clothing, jewellery and art covering our skin" she explains
.
"There are plenty of people who have, and do experience love and tragedy, and who strive to live a healthy and wonderful life, all with living an alternative lifestyle" she adds "The models I've picked are all beautiful in their own unique ways and have come under fire of a judgemental eye many times. I want to share the love, paint beautiful people and show everyone, that tattoos are something to be proud of, that being different is something to be proud of, and to never change because of how somebody judges you."
The show is a taster for a larger exhibition at the Cornerstone scheduled for May next year. In the meantime, Alexandra is available for portrait commissions.
