How is the way journalists are depicted in fiction and films different from the day-to-day job of bringing the news to the nation? This and other questions are being discussed via the Manchester and Salford NUJ's Four Pound Film Club, which meets every month to show classic films, usually followed with a guest speaker and discussion.

This Thursday, September 29th sees the Billy Wilder comedy The Front Page being shown at 7:30pm (£4).
It stars Walter Matthau as the ruthless newspaper editor Walter Burns, and Jack Lemmon as his crack ace reporter Hildy. They believe that together they can cover any story. The only trouble is their team is being broken up because Hildy has decided to get married and leave the business. Hildy grooms his replacement but his retirement is derailed when the story of the century breaks. All of Chicago is in pursuit but Hildy's instincts tell him something is wrong…
Thursday October 27th (7:30pm £4) sees a showing of All The President's Men, the classic journalism movie about the Watergate scandal that drove US President Nixon from office. It stars Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman and is screened just in time for the Presidential elections in the US...
On Wednesday November 30th (7:30pm £4) it's The Fourth Estate, a low budget Brit documentary illuminating not only specific incidences of corruption by press groups, but how the wider business as a whole, including the film and entertainment industries, has a huge amount to answer for in the state of the political economy. There will be a guest speaker after the film.
On Thursday 15th December (7:30pm £4) there's a festive showing of Newsies featuring trade unionism, journalism, song and dance, and is the true story of the newspaper boys' strike that stopped The World. It's being shown as part of the branch Christmas Party.
