SALFORD CITY COUNCIL £41MILLION CUTS TO HEAP MORE MISERY ON RESIDENTS

Star date: 17th August 2016 £41.7MILLION CUTS EXPECTED OVER NEXT THREE YEARS To follow Salford City Council's £21.8million cuts this year, there's another £41.7million expected to follow over the next three years – which will see even more services closed, privatised or slashed. As Salford Council merrily hands Peel Holdings £9million, as part of its £19million public funding for the RHS Garden in Worsley (see here), it is also about to embark on another cutting spree, at the behest of the Tory Government... This financial year, 2016-17, Salford Council has a target to save £21.8million, while a Council budget report states there's another £41.7million cuts to follow over the next three years, if it accepts the Tory Government's offer of a `funding settlement' until 2019-20. The Council has until 10th October to respond... "The current updated medium term financial strategy forecasts savings required in 2016/17 of £21.8m and funding gaps of £14.8m in 2017/18, £14.8m in 2018/19 and £12.1m in 2019/20" states a Council document "This requires the redesign and transformation of services to help deliver the future savings required..." The problem is that everything that could be `redesigned and transformed' has already been done under the previous Salford Mayor, Ian Stewart... ...Almost all of the city's council houses were flogged off to Salix Homes, adult social care was `outsourced' to Aspire, the adult Passenger Transport Unit was axed, health and social care is becoming `integrated' to `reduce costs'; services for 0-25 year olds have been slashed, a self serve digital policy for residents is being enacted, the bins have been reduced to three weekly collections in parts of the city, and hundreds of council staff have been transferred to private companies or urged to take redundancy. Meanwhile, the swimming pools, libraries and sports facilities have been hived off to Salford Community Leisure, highways and planning given over to Urban Vision and loads of the city's schools have been `academised'... For the future, Salford Council does give some hints in a budget report as to what is next to be hammered... Children's Services – "further savings commitments in development for future years" Public Health – "Additional savings will be phased in at 2.5% in 2017/18 and 2.6% (in each of the two following years..." This despite Council forecasts of over £12million extra Council Tax revenue and £4million more in business rates over the period... A letter from the Government to Salford Councils states, creepily... "As part of the move to a more self-sufficient local government, these multi-year settlements can provide the funding certainty and stability to enable more proactive planning of service delivery and support strategic collaboration with local partners. Councils should also use their multi-year settlements to strengthen financial management and efficiency, including by maximising value in arrangements with suppliers and making strategic use of reserves in the interests of residents." Will Salford's Labour Council take the `multi-year settlements' and carry on cutting? Or has Jeremy Corbyn made a difference to a mode of operation which has, at times, seen the Council at war with vulnerable people in its own community? Every budget indication is that Salford Council will take the Theresa May shilling...

I do believe that your comment will probably get the backs up of anyone who has a high public profile online. I also believe that the reason why someone would hide their identity, would have nothing to do with their IQ, but could be considered as a sign that someone has a lack of back bone or spine. |

| Dismissing someone's point of view because they don't use their real name is kind of an ad hominem attack isn't it? Anything you put on the internet is there forever. Are you going to be the same person in 20 years? Would you be happy to say everything in front of your grandmother and all possible future employers? That limits you to using the type of gentle, family-friendly "humour" which isn't actually funny. Would it be wise to engage with the type of delusional narcissist who does "political campaigning" in comment sections? Would any of us really wanted Richard Carvath turning up on our doorstep? If they don't have anything in particular to promote, it seems to me, the size of someone's internet presence is inversely proportional to their IQ. |

And no I won't be putting my name on here, why should I? I dont have a public profile nor do I want one and I certainly don't want any mob turning up at my door cos I've upset anyone! | Shocked, extremely shocked at the Ray comments. I know my condemnation of Labour has caused me to be on the Labour most hated list, but your attacks against the persons you name are unacceptable. You must apologies at once for reaching the bottom of the barrel on this excellent discussion site. And I demand Salford Labour distance themselves from your comments or become tarnished the same. Does Labour leadership:- Corbyn, Burham or even that Owen man subscribe to your rant? UKIP has nothing to fear, it is a broad church of respectable people that can stop the £41million cuts to Salford which threaten the sustainable future of our young people. Health, Education, Skills, Jobs and North West Security are my priorities in the fight against Westminster MPs. And please do get your facts correct about me. At age 22 my first hate by Doncaster Labour Executive was due to me sleeping with the MPs wife, but as he had a mistress and I was single I think they should have kept their noses out of my relationship. | Yes Ray. Only 2 places in the Assembly for Labour due to its civil war that will otherwise destroy Salford and Greater Manchester. I am pleased you take the facts seriously. With Tony Lloyd having last been elected with 5% of 2.8million votes Grrater Manchester Police Commissioner) at 135,000 votes the writing is on the wall. National newspapers have UKIP on 11% that would wipe out any chance of an Andy Burnham Labour mayor. The projected UKIP vote of 280,000 votes in Greater Manchester will tell Westminster the Brexit means Brexit and force PM May to get moving fast. In each day the exit is delayed the UK risks loss of the 65,000 jobs that Brexit offers Greater Manchester. |

As for our friend Ray - yes I hate modern politics where an extremist group infiltrated and destroyed a once respected Labour Party. It says much about Labour Councillors that choose to stay with the now changed extremist party just to keep picking up expenses. I would sack them all, Councillors, MPs and Mayors. The proof in a disaffected public was Tony Lloyd who won with just 5% of the Greater Manchester population. 95% did not want Labour. It is the low turn out that has created the opportunity for extremists and as God is our witness we see the extremists winning. |

| I totally agree with Tahir. Excellent summary. As for a White you can be sure I have spent 40 years fighting for Equality and Social Inclusion. It is why I say we must give young people reasons to be proud of Councils. £20million must go into a youth live music stage to capture the World music opportunities. Youth Apps new invention challenge must put Salford and Manchester boroughs to the test of youth creativity with £16 million into bursary apps launches and each young person at school to have a £10 a week attendance bursary towards either University fees, skills foreign exchange visits or techno bundle, such as IPads. Skills will make Greater Manchester the ideal Northern Powerhouse nerve centre with 65,000 quality new jobs building a robust future. |

| Dear Michael James Felse, many people blame political parties for the mess we are in, but essentitially we are all to blame. The Salfordians and Mancunians, in my opinion, allowed the local councils to knock down the social housing, and replace it with cheap chipboard, brick and glass constructs. In my opinion, the people have allowed the council to increase council taxes but reduce the services we receive. The true problem is "Ultimate Power"'," Corrupts". I have lived long enough to understand that nearly every political body on this planet starts off with good intentions, but "Control", and "Power" become an uncontrollable addictive drug. The more one has, the more one wants. Most of the problems in the world are caused by people with good intentions, that do not possess the ability to control the impulses of their destructive nature, when introduced to wealth, control and power. In my opinion, human nature is the problem on this planet. President Kennedy once said "no one man should be in control of everything". There lies the problem. Every political party takes it orders from one man or one woman. Essentially one person has all the power. Until we as the human race learn to control our urges to be distrustful and vengeful, the problem will just keep getting worse. In my opinion, we all live on the same planet, breath the same air, so we all should bare the same responsibility for the bad political decisions we made in Salford and Manchester. If we all stop turning a blind eye to corruption, homelessness, destitution, and discrimination, our cities would thrive. So I am sorry Micheal James False, in my opinion, the problem does not lie with any one political party, the problems within our city are caused by the lack of action taken by the population of Salford and Manchester citizens, who are willing to ignore or turn a blind eye to the disgusting conditions imposed by the very people we placed in a position of power, to support and protect us all. |

| Today gives proof that miracles happen as we read @Ray saying Labour is far from perfect. Actually it was far from perfect 15 years ago. It is now nasty, hateful, spiteful and has internet trolls abusing not only good people in other political party but also attacking nice own members still sticking with Labour, hoping for a miracle that may save Labour, but it is too late. I warned Labour Exec about its internal danger 15 years ago. They expelled me and their hate is now unstoppable. Good people need to ditch Labour quickly. As for economic solutions in Greater Manchester and Salford it starts with me being working class and eyes wide open. It needs a cross party Assembly to pull in agreement from the top of each party. 4 seats Conservative. 4 seats Greens. 4 seats UKIP. 2 seats Labour and 6 seats for independent local community groups. My plan to them guarantees 65,000 jobs, 100,000 social homes, £10 a week attendance bursary to all young people in Education, £2billion investment and a Northern Power House nerve centre on Chapel Street, Salford plus £12million into Salford flood defense. As you see my alternative to Labour is Trust and Respect. |

Like any human institution, Labour is far from perfect but at least it holds out the prospect that ultimately working people will hold economic and

| Thank you SalfordResident for asking but I doubt any answers from Labour will be coming here. I am sad for The Labour Party. They use trolls and hide behind Niknames to hurl abuse which is making us ask why. Why has the Labour Party that I was once a policy writer and campaigner for turned nasty? I do not welcome their attacks against me but know those kind of tactics mean we are hiting a nerve. Having been raped, abused and attacked from the age of 9 has made me realise what animals some people in our UK communities choose to be. I fear Labour will not go back to representing good but will become the bad apples of politics. |

| Please tell us what is the point of Labour? At each others' throat in a death battle that I watched on Victoria TV today. Labour destroying itself has no courage left to tell Tories to take a hike on cuts. Enough is enough. But if we have not learnt yet from Salford Labour Council empty promises we certainly will learn in the next 3 years why we should say NO to Labour. Salford Councillors should resign. They have shown themselves to be unfit for purpose. |
