SALFORD LISTED 1840 BURGESS FARMHOUSE SET TO BE TRASHED
Peel Holdings, under the guise of Peel Investments (North) Ltd, is proposing to bulldoze the locally listed farmhouse and connected buildings at Burgess Farm, which date back to around 1840.
Peel wants to erect up to ten houses on the site and Salford Council officers are recommending approval for the demolition at tomorrow's planning meeting, despite original plans for the Farm including retention of the cottages.

Peel Investments (North) Ltd – one of Peel Holdings' zillion sub-companies – is proposing to trash the farmhouse and all the connected cottages and buildings at Burgess Farm in Little Hulton, despite plans to retain them in original proposals for the controversial site.
The farmhouse dates back to around 1840 and is one of the last surviving structures of its kind in what was formerly a rural farming area. It was included in a list of local heritage assets by Salford Council only three years ago…
"…it is considered that the buildings are of local interest and their architectural and aesthetic value is found in the site's historic agricultural form which as viewed from the street-scene appears largely unaltered since original construction" state Council planning officers in a report to tomorrow's planning panel.
The officers then add that "the farmstead is in a poor state of repair and appears to have extensive structural damage, particularly to the most historic buildings facing onto Hilton Lane…restoration is economically unviable and therefore, on balance, the loss of the non-designated heritage asset, although regrettable, is justified with the public benefits of securing the site's optimum viable use outweighing the harm caused."
Their conclusion is being opposed by local residents and local Councillor Richard Critchley, who, the planning report states, has raised concerns "that the plans for the wider redevelopment of Burgess Farm retained the former farm buildings, the proposal would remove local heritage features and therefore impact upon the character of the area….
"Councillor Critchley also considered that the buildings have been neglected since the farm closed and that insufficient information has been provided to local residents regarding the planning application."
Burgess Farm as a whole saw one of the most bitter fights seen in recent years over loss of green space, when Peel Holdings wanted to concrete it over and build hundreds of houses back in 2011/12. Despite the Planning Inspector opposing Peel's plans, the then Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, overturned the decision.
Meanwhile, an official report released at the time also showed the "highly unusual circumstances" surrounding Salford Council's role in the planning fiasco (see previous Salford Star article – click here).
Now, at tomorrow's planning panel (28th July), Salford councillors have another chance to stop Peel in its heritage destroying tracks…
Update: 29th July 2016: Despite the Lead member for Planning, Councillor Derek Antrobus, recommending approval of the application to demolish the Salford listed farmhouse, the decision was `deferred' while `high level meetings' take place...

The panel met today and decided to defer the decision to give time for last minute high level discussions with Peel. The hope is that they can be encouraged to preserve some of the site and find a compromise. Peel didn't seem keen but there's always hope. Huge thanks to Sue Occleston for attending and speaking up for the community. |

| It would appear that whilst the buildings were initially 'supposed' to be retained the plan by Peel .....(whichever name they are using this week) was always going to allow the buildings to deteriorate to the point whereby their Council buddies could use the "estoration is economically unviable " card so that, unbeknown to the ratepayers and voters, Peel were always going to build whatever the hell they wanted without any serious opposition. Up and down the country there are councils in the pockets of developers and the bigger the developer the deeper the pockets. The only chance that I can see to save this farm is for as many people as possible who can locate their Local Councillor should bombard them with emails tonight and tomorrow and if enough people could/will actually attend the meeting tomorrow to voice their displeasure, it just may be possible for the little guys to win one. |

| This sort of behaviour doesn't surprise me, Peel Holdings with the assistance of Salford City Council(SCC) have walked roughshod over the people of Walkden and Little Hulton. SCC allowed the same thing to happen to Peel Hall on Madame Wood, a developer bought it did nothing with it and slowly it fell apart people stole parts of it vandals got in and eventually the developers said it wasn't viable to save and in a state of disrepair. Bulldozers moved in and an irreplaceable building disappeared and more houses put up. How many more historical buildings need to disappear? |

| Salford council over the last few years have allowed our history and heritage be turned into rubble to line the pockets of fatcat developers.we must not allow buildings of historical interest be lost to make the rich richer.And make our generation's to come poorer. |
