Next Saturday, 11th June, Boycott Dogs4Us will launch another protest outside the firm's premises on Agecroft Road to raise more awareness of practices exposed by a recent BBC Panorama programme.*
The store, which has Wayne Rooney amongst its celebrity clients, was exposed on Panorama for selling a puppy that had come from a breeder in Northern Ireland who experts said shouldn't be licensed. Meanwhile, the former store manager of Dogs4Us showed the Panorama reporter files full of complaints from customers who had been sold ill dogs, or cross breeds sold as pedigrees; and told how the store would take in pups younger than eight weeks old, too young to be transported under UK law.
The Dogs4Us section of the Panorama programme ended with a quote from a web page claiming "All our puppies come from licensed breeders and are completely traceable". Yet when the reporter tried to trace the breeder of one dog from its paperwork, the address in North Wales showed no-one living there of the name given, while there was no breeding licence for the address either.
"Dogs4Us was exposed on BBC Panorama selling puppies from cruel puppy farms, buying puppies under eight weeks old, selling fake pedigree dogs, selling untraceable dogs from unlicensed breeders and selling seriously ill dogs to the public" says Boycott Dogs4Us spokesperson Aran Mathai "We are calling on Salford Council to work with us to review their pet shop licence conditions for the sale of dogs so as to prevent such abuse in the future."
Salford and Eccles Labour MP, Rebecca Long Bailey has expressed her "full support" for the Boycott Dogs4Us protest, saying "I am appalled that dogs are being legitimately sold across Greater Manchester that have suffered the most horrific conditions...This should not be condoned in the UK."
And Salford Labour Party Councillor, Bill Hinds, added: "I support Boycott Dogs4Us in their campaign against puppy farming. The sale of poorly bred dogs has no place in Salford."
The protest outside the Dogs4Us store follows a similar protest outside Parliament recently which was attended by model Jodie Marsh, MPs from across all political parties and celebrity vet, Marc Abraham, a dog welfare champion and founder of Pup Aid, who is also backing the Salford protest...
"I'm proud to fully support Boycott Dogs4Us in their campaign against both the legal and illegal puppy farm trade, the horrors of which were highlighted by the recent Panorama exposé" he says "This shocking investigation showed very clearly that licenced puppy dealers such as puppy superstore Dogs4Us should not be in operation; as being a third party seller (pups sold without their mums) they provide an outlet for irresponsibly bred pups as well as encouraging impulse purchases."
