Salford Community Leisure (SCL) is seeking eight Salford girls to front a new This Girl Can Salford campaign to inspire people to get more active and fit, as Sport England research reveals that 63% of Salford women do no sport at all.
SCL is asking women of all shapes, sizes and abilities to come forward and tell their stories about their association with sport, health and fitness and explain why they could front the campaign.
The winners of the competition will become the faces of This Girl Can Salford, will be invited to the Salford Sports Network Sports Awards dinner in September and receive a month's worth of free group fitness classes. Their stories will be also be used on SCL's social media pages along with pictures and video.
"We're not looking for Olympians, it's real women who enjoy being active and have a story to tell that will make a difference to the community in Salford" says Mark Chew, Head of SCL's Sport and Leisure "There are so many special stories out there and it will be great to give them a platform on which they can be shared.
"This campaign is all about encouraging women to take part in sport or to start an activity, whether it is for the first time or returning to something that they enjoyed in school" he adds "We would like to hear from everyone in the community who feels that they have achieved something in their active life, even if they have just started a new regime and are inspired by the This Girl Can Salford campaign."
Former top athlete Diane Modahl, who is backing the competition, underlines the point...
"It is time for everyone to understand that sport and fitness is not an elite club, it is open to everyone and everybody has their own goals" she says "Achieving a personal best in deadlifts, running a 5k or simply making it through a zumba class without stopping are all equally valid achievements.
"It's not about competing with the rest of the community, it's about measuring yourself against your own abilities, increasing your fitness and, in turn, feeling better than before" she adds "I can't wait to see the entries for This Girl Can Salford."
