SALFORD COUNCIL VOTES TO DEMOLISH LISTED BLACK HORSE PUB

Councillor Ronnie Wilson This morning, Salford councillors voted to allow Fred Done's company, Property (Done) Ltd, to demolish the locally listed Black Horse pub and build 399 unaffordable rental flats in blocks up to 22 storeys high within the Crescent conservation area. The only vote against the scheme was by Seedley and Weaste councillor Ronnie Wilson who said that Salford Council had `crossed a red line'. Full details here...

Fred `Bet Fred' Done's company, Property (Done) Ltd, this morning got the go-ahead to demolish the grade A locally listed Black Horse pub, and build 399 unaffordable flats in blocks up to 22 storeys high in the Crescent conservation area. Despite objections from Historic England, the Victorian Society and residents, councillors passed the plans with only one dissenting voice; that of Seedley and Weaste Councillor Ronnie Wilson, who called the plans "disturbing"... "Once more we are destroying our architecture as one after another building goes; this is historical for local residents" he added "As a representative of the people I am not willing to cross this red line..." Councillor Karen Garrido argued that the Black Horse pub had been empty for years... "The public should have done something about it but we didn't" she said, adding that she didn't see anything in the plans that had sympathy with the buildings in the conservation area. She called the scheme "harsh", "grey" and "bland" – and then voted in favour of it. A representative of Fred Done's company told the planning panel that if they could they would have saved the Black Horse... "It wasn't feasible to keep the pub...we didn't want the pub...that was out of our hands" he said "We're Salfordians, we're trying to bring the Crescent back to life" he argued "We're lucky that we've got Fred Done who is willing to invest his capital, not for immediate return...The quality of this is second to none." As the Salford Star first reported, the scheme will trash the Crescent conservation area, bulldoze a listed pub, build almost four hundred unaffordable flats which the developer itself can't afford to build, and give nothing back to the city in terms of planning payments. About five red lines were crossed this morning...

| Historic England North West wrote to Urban Vision in December 2015 objecting, in no uncertain terms, to the demolition and proposed development on the Black Horse site. They further wrote to them at the End of March 2016 re stating their objections to this bland out of place environmentally damaging proposal. In spite of this Salford City Council shockingly gave the go ahead on April 7th. Something is sadly amiss here. It is a vile development and will, in my opinion, in no way enhance the important conservation area. Shame on you Salford City Councillors.

| When is our country (Westminster) going to finally wake up and strip our "apathetic" town halls & "unqualified" local councillors of all their responsibilities over local planning & transport issues? Hasn't fifty+ years of uglification, continuing lost heritage & squandered local transport investment taught this country anything? Come on Messrs Osborne, Heseltine & Adonis – you’ve already done it with the police & now education, so why not planning & transport too? Give us a "directly elected" local planning & transport commissioner (or board) and more devolution to the people please, not to our "out of touch" local councillors & town halls! |

| As an incomer (only lived here 3 years) I can see Salford has been blighted by terrible planning decisions through the decades. The evidence is so obvious to anyone taking a short drive around here. This latest act of vandalism is a decision taken I'm sure by the spiritual descendants of those fools who have blighted so much of Salford. |

| I cannot believe that the Salford Council are considering knocking down this Grade Listed Building. Despite it's outer appearance, this buildings structure is completely sound. There is absolutely no need to knock this building down. With some investment, this building could be kept standing, and redeveloped / refurbished internally to produce some fantastic character apartments, which would still make an average developer a decent return on their investment. In my opinion, pretty much all of Salford's Grade Listed Buildings are being destroyed, so cheap, minimum standard, over priced apartments can be built. Why can we not be like Liverpool Council. They take a Grade Listed Building, and turn it into characterful apartments, which seem to fetch more money than their glass, brick, and chipboard fabricated counterparts. In my opinion, there are apartment blocks that are just 10 years old in Salford which are experiencing structual and internal problems due to the cheap construction materials, that were used to build them. Old Grade Listed Buildings are built to last, and certainly are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, than some brick, glass, and chipboard construct. We should as Salford Citizens be putting up more of a fight with our council, to ensure these beautiful buildings, which are part of Salford's heritage, are left standing, in order to preserve what is left of Salford's History. In my opinion, if we allow further cheaply constructed apartments to be built, within 20 years, Salford will be nothing more than a pile of soggy chipboard, piles of bricks and smashed glass. Is this really what the Salford Citizens want to leave for their grandchildren? |

| I am not from Salford so do not have the strong feeling of loyalty that Salfordians have to the city. However, I do have a sense of history and appreciate the esthetic value of old buildings which demonstrate the skills of past craftsmen. Modern building maybe functional but they are rarely attractive or with character. No tourists will look with admiration and interest at a 22 floor block of flats, whereas they would enjoy admiring a building which has a story to tell. Of course, it will cost money but, with imagination and determination, historic buildings could be preserved. Does the Council not take into consideration what drives the developer. The profession of the Done's is hardly one of esteem. I show my prejudice here but, in every other area of life, the person reputation is significant when decisions are made. The Council is selling its history for a block of concrete. It is a shallow decision without benefits for the community, and certainly not in keeping with a conservation area. |

| Well done Ronnie Wilson, but what's wrong with the rest of the council. The Black Horse Hotel is a superb building if in need of repair and will be a loss to the Crescent. There's a petition on change.org to try and save it before it's too late |
