When you follow the team that you love, you support them through thick and thin. Yes there will be good times, and yes there will be battles when you fight against the drop. But today, a certain number of fans, maybe less than a handful, were intent of bringing the great name of Salford RLFC into the gutter.
I have been a Salford fan all my life and am very passionate about them, and the city as a whole, but what I witnessed today at Huddersfield was not the sport I love so much. When players' wives with their little children are scared because mindless idiots are throwing and letting of a flare near them; and then a few of them want to fight with the stewards...well lads, I suggest you find another sport because you are not welcome by the true Salford fans. Salford players fighting with Salford fans, trying to protect their own kids? Have a good look at yourselves.
Rugby League is a family sport and always will be. I felt sorry for the players who gave so much today, and for the genuine fans. We don't need fans like that in our game. Last week at Hull KR the fans liaison officer came onto the coach and said we were the best fans in Super League. What a difference a week makes.
The score seems unimportant now but Salford played brilliant against a much bigger Huddersfield team that took the lead after having only two attacks in the first half and scoring both times. 12-10.
I was expecting decent things in the second half and when I bumped into several genuine fans I know, it was the usual banter... `Well, do you think we will do it?'...Well we always keep the faith, and a hard fought second half saw us gain the lead with a few minutes to go, and the lads held on for a hard fought win, 26 -24
Kopczak, O'Brien, Griffin, Carney, Evavlds Dobson (3) were the Salford scorers. But, sadly, this game will not be remembered for a great team performance and the way that most of the 1,000 Salford fans behaved.
