The Democracy Club, a non profit community interest company, is aiming to provide details of every single candidate standing in every single election, nationwide, this May by crowdsourcing their biographical and contact details.
"In general election campaigns, voters might receive leaflets or a visit from an activist" the Club states "This is less likely for regional or local elections. This makes it harder for anyone to learn about their candidates in advance of seeing the ballot paper.
"There is no nationwide or governmental collation of data on candidates, so Democracy Club aims to mobilise the power of the crowd to provide a solution" it adds "The collected data will be made widely available through journalists, newspapers, campaigners and to voters themselves."
So far there's no details at all for Salford, which has local elections for councillors and the election for City Mayor on May 5th.
"We know trust in politics is low" says Sym Roe, the director of the project, "So here's something people can do to make our democracy work better for everyone."
People can go on the Democracy Club website and add any relevant contact details, facebook and web pages and any other stuff which might help voters to decide where their vote is going. The site is protected from malicious updates by requiring sources and recording a version history every time a change is made. Image uploads are moderated by a team of superadmins, so no donkey images will be allowed.
