This morning, members of Greater Manchester Unite Community branch leafleted claimants entering Salford Job Centre, off Churchill Way, protesting against sanctions and giving out `rights' information about what to do if sanctions are in place...
"We're here protesting against the continued imposition of sanctions whereby claimants are deprived of large amounts of their weekly benefit for minor misdemeanours, like being late for signing on" said Unite's Chris Hadfield "We believe that the ideology behind this is designed purely and simply to punish claimants and people who are on benefits generally, and we think it's unfair and unjust.
"One woman we spoke to this morning was sanctioned for a month, with no money, and left entirely dependent on friends, family and the food bank" he added "She hadn't been informed that there was any system from which she could get emergency payments or appeal the sanction; she was left completely in the dark.
"If today we are at least able to signpost people to agencies that can help, then it's been worthwhile" he explained "But in the longer term the aim is to get rid of the sanctions policy and get rid of this malicious government that's implementing the policy."
