PAUL DENNETT SELECTED TO BE SALFORD LABOUR PARTY MAYOR CANDIDATE

Star date: 13th February 2016 DENNETT GETS THE LABOUR VOTE ON 57% TURNOUT Councillor Paul Dennett today won the race to be the Labour Party candidate in the May election for the post of Salford Mayor, in a 57% turnout of Party members. A close ally of current Mayor, Ian Stewart, Dennett is now the odds on favourite to be the next Mayor of Salford. "I will always speak up for a better and fairer Salford" he said after the anointment this afternoon, while over in the Royal Oak pub in Eccles, campaigners against cuts were sharpening their claws for future fights. Langworthy Councillor Paul Dennett was today selected as the Salford Labour Party mayoral candidate over fellow candidates Paul Wilson and Roger Jones. Only 57% of the 900 Party members who were eligible voted in the election but it was enough to select Dennett with a majority on the first ballot. Dennett, a close ally of unpopular current Mayor, Ian Stewart, said after his selection... "I will always be a strong voice for Salford. I have a vision for the city that involves growth, jobs and opportunities for local people. I will work with the Greater Manchester Mayor, business and community partners to attract investment and development to Salford. "The Tories are failing local people" he added "I will always speak up for a better and fairer Salford and prioritise the hardworking families here." Dennett ran into his first controversy ten days ago when the Salford Star raised questions about how he obtained his social housing flat in Albion Towers (see here), while this afternoon, as the Labour Party was celebrating with its mayoral candidate, Salford Against The Cuts was meeting at the Royal Oak pub in Eccles to draw up a People's Budget. The audience heard how the unions, including UNISON and Unite (which sponsors Dennett), have changed their policies to have a more aggressive stance against cuts, which Salford's Labour Council – and Dennett as Strategic Mayor – has been forcing on Salford people... | Labour canvass this weekend in Pendlebury could not answer questions about their candidates priority council flat. There is talk about a Salix homes staff man and the qualifying address at time of getting on Salford housing list. Any more Blackfriers info? |

| Wrote asks why people move to Salford. I cannot answer for others but mine was to seek employment. My coal town had been closed down by Maggie Thacher. Easier to find work on Mars. Best move ever. My relatives that stayed are still on the dole, while I am Headmaster of the Adult Skills Academy. It has seen me awarded the Medal of Excellence 2016 for Business Skills leadership from the major awarding body. Hope this helps answer the why question. Michael J Felse. |

| Like Ian Stewart this person has used the city of Salford itself as a career. No apparent working background, I stand to be corrected but cannot find any history of any. I wonder when he first stepped foot in Salford.? Could he not get anywhere in his home town of Warrington. There seem to be a large number of labour councillors who have come to this city for their own personal careers. No roots here.

| Not much to smile about. Facts are in the MEN. Paul Dennett got just 311 votes from his 900+ Salford Labour Party paid up members. Disaster by apathy. Probably caused by the bad press and the Labour party membership split. The MEN describes him as the Left Wing of Labour. Have not met one person in Salford who agrees with his Corbyn Left policies. Salford Labour is in melt down like a none nuclear deterrent policy putting us at risk.

| How long has Labour been in power in Salford?
If they haven't achieved what they wanted while in power in government for all those years, what can change anything now with another hand picked yes man box ticker?
I just dont know what it is, but I feel Salford people are somehow pressed into poverty and pressed into silence to keep the dictatorship in power.
Change is needed in Salford and the rest of the country. The silent majority need to awaken before it is too late. |

| Perhaps Mary has evidence? Labour Towers is no worse than the right wing UKiP movement in Salford with its one way ticket ride out of Europe. No other policies. Looks like people can only trust the Salford Tories to save local services. |

| Someone joked about Cllr Jones BMW. Rather like UKips candidate Mr Hammond with his facebooks priority of Barton Airadromes profitability. Out of tough with we local folk is a bad thing. Cllr Dennett plays it best by taking on the cheapest Council Flat and seen as in touch with salford voters while the Tory Garriddoo lives in posher Worsley Green and the UKip Hammond in a 3 story Town House on Salford Quays. | Same old same old jumping on the negativity bandwagon. Why not move out of Salford if you don't like the system?? I think people like Mary need to be very careful about the accusations of getting something by shady means, when there's no evidence been produced. If you were such a great councillor yourself you would still have a seat.

| I welcome Paul Dennett as the Labour best choice. It is time for all to end past conflicts and look to the future if we truly want to build a better future for Salford. One important bit of advice. | Who is Paul Dennett? we all understand he lives in a flat, but what else do we have to look forward to? Endorsed by Norman Owen and the Unions and of course the present Mayoral failure. But because he wears a Labour rosette does it allow him the keys to the Mayors office. It seems even the Star think he is a shoe in, perhaps we should look a little deeper at all the candidates before we pick the favourite. if I was a betting man I would look at a horses form if I use the same formula to pick the Mayoral winner I Think Labours Candidate would be a 100 to 1 rank outsider. Four years of Mayor Stuart would just be a Dangerous extension, one failure to the next. |
