Michael Cretu, composer, double bassist and current visiting music director at Community Arts North West, is to lead a public event on Saturday 30th January at Salford Museum and Art Gallery to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Cretu will perform a series of pieces inspired by Romani folk music and string playing styles. These include two of his own classical contemporary pieces, influenced by Gypsy folk, two Balkan folk pieces brought into Romania from Turkey by travelling Roma musicians, and two jazz pieces by his late uncle, Johnny Raducanu – considered the father of Romanian jazz.
Cretu will also share testimonies that he has collected from Romani Holocaust survivors in Transylvania.
The gallery is also currently hosting Turn Sideways in the Wind, an exhibition on the lives of Roma migrants in Greater Manchester, by documentary photographer Ciara Leeming.
