This Friday, 15th January, sees the second Salford flood relief concert, following last Saturday's event at Lower Kersal Social Club (see here). This latest effort to raise money for flood victims is at Swinton Legion and boasts a whole evening of entertainment.
The night stars Mississippi Soul Man, Malcolm McBride, born in the USA but now living in Clifton, who does top covers of soul and Motown, from The Drifters to The Four Tops to Otis Reading (see here). Supporting are classic rock pop harmony band, Wolf, and female duo Le Zar, plus DJs Keith Leigh and Stuart Linguard.
"I'm a Salford lad; I don't live there now but I've seen the pictures in the papers and on social media and a lot of people have suffered a lot of devastation" says event organiser Jonathan Buck, who is also a DJ and event co-ordinator.
"If you put yourself in their position, it's Boxing Day your house gets flooded, your Christmas is ruined and you lose everything, so if we can try and help these people in any way and raise a few quid then why not?" he adds "I know that I wouldn't want to be there on Boxing Day and my leftover Christmas dinner is floating out my back door. It's not nice. There's a lot of unemployment in Salford and people haven't got the money to replace items, so if we can try and bring a bit of happiness to the these people and they get a few quid out of it, then great."
All the money raised will be going to Forever Manchester's Greater Manchester Flood Recovery Appeal...
"These are the worst floods in Greater Manchester in living memory" says Rachel Hirst, Head of Communities at Forever Manchester "Salford last flooded to this extent in 1946 and 1954; however this level of widespread flooding is unprecedented. Across Greater Manchester it is estimated that around 2,227 properties have been affected. The effects were truly devastating.
"On 27th December, Forever Manchester launched the Greater Manchester Flood Recovery Appeal to raise money for people affected by the floods" she adds "We are delighted that the Flood Relief Concert is raising money to support the appeal and Forever Manchester would like to say a huge thanks to everyone giving up their time to make this happen. All money raised through the appeal will be distributed through affected local authorities to support to those affected by the floods."
Swinton Legion, which has given the room free, holds 250 people, and tickets are selling fast. They are available, price £5 from the Legion, or via the Facebook page Flood Relief Concert, or by paying on the door (£6).
"I want to create a big event" says Jonathon, who will be compering the night "People will be getting a good night out but also making a difference to those whose lives have been affected..."
