Next year, expect a sweet sorrow of tributes to England's greatest literary hero as the four hundredth anniversary of William Shakespeare's death plays out on the world's stage.
Getting in early is Manchester's Transatlantyk2 theatre company, which brings 1616 -The Secrets and Passions of William Shakespeare to The Kings Arms on consecutive Fridays, 11th and 18th September, as part of a national and international tour that has already been well received in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The one-man, fast-paced play, featuring actor/writer Gareth Somers, recreates Shakespeare's dying hours, picking through the `rinds and fruits' of his life as the Bard revisits the passions and politics that formed him, and explores themes of aging, memory and creativity.
"The play is the culmination of a 25 year of study of Shakespeare's plays through my work as an actor, director, writer and lecturer" explains Gareth Somers "1616 questions who William Shakespeare really was and imagines what might have been going through his mind in his dying hours…"
He was probably thinking `In four hundred years no-one's going to give a shit about me', but there you go... Shakespeare's genius has survived in the globe's psyche because every bit of human truth is there in his words. There's something for everyone, including our very own Salford Mayor...
