RUNNING AROUND SALFORD TO HELP SISTER

Walkden's David Broadhurst will be running the Salford 10K next Sunday, September 6th, to raise funds for Target Ovarian Cancer which gives support to women and the search to find new treatments.

David's sister, Lorraine, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 and the family has used running, and fundraising fun runs, to help battle the illness.

Next Sunday, 6th September, it's the Salford 10k Run and 43 year old David Broadhurst, from Walkden, will be pounding the streets to raise money for Target Ovarian Cancer, a charity which campaign for better GP training, awareness raising, better screening and access to improved treatments.

David' sister, Lorraine, a keen runner, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2011 but still does the occasional run when she can.

"It's made running a bit more challenging" she says "but I have been doing my bit by plodding around my local park runs through chemo. I hope to complete my 100th run at the end of October in Pendle, Lancashire. It must be catching because my brother started running about three years ago. At first he was reluctant to enter any events as he didn't think he would be good enough. However I managed to convince him that you don't have to be Usain Bolt and it's a lot of fun.

"This year he has really been going for it  - he did his first 10k in Bolton, he has regularly been attending Bolton Parkrun; last weekend he did the Fleetwood Half Marathon and next Sunday he will be taking part in the Salford 10k" she adds "I think he is well and truly addicted but he has agreed to join my fundraising effort for Target Ovarian Cancer."

Lorraine has set a target of £1,000 for the charity, has already reached almost 75% of the total, and is hoping that David's efforts next Sunday pushes it further.

"Target Ovarian Cancer has done so much for me" Lorraine explains "It has given me something to focus on and helped me adjust. Now I want to do something for them.

"David is a typical stoic bloke, he doesn't say too much but I can see he worries and it has upset him" she adds "However he and his wife, Lynn, have been very supportive, especially when it came to breaking the news of my cancer to my parents. It means a lot to me that David is also enjoying his running and that he wants to help me raise money. Mum and I will be there at the start and finish line next Sunday cheering on my younger brother, of whom we are both very proud."
