Local author and DJ Simon Williams was fed up with the constraints of mainstream radio, so decided in true D.I.Y. fashion to start his own station. This week, the Sounds of Salford Radio was born.
"I started it up basically because I was sick of mainstream radio where presenters are being governed by other people and they can't say anything, or haven't got the balls to say anything" Simon explains "If it's going on around you should be talking about it, a bit like the Salford Star."
The new station aims to cover local issues in a proper way, while hosting poets, bands, raconteurs and basically anyone who wants a voice or wants to promote whatever they are doing creatively. The station currently has only one show on a loop, presented by Simon but has already attracted over one thousand listeners in a week and has a podcast going out in the States.
"I do the Golden Oldies section but hopefully other DJs will bring their own genres with them" says Simon "It's open to anyone from Manchester and Salford. If you fancy having a go just get in touch and I'll show you what to do. We also want bands to get in touch and we'll give them airplay. The station's not started properly but it's building and I want the people of Salford to come on board and grow with it."
