Carol Robson - nominated for best Spoken Word at GM Fringe and four star reviewed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 - examines everyday issues that affect our lives and takes a humorous look at things like television reality shows, going to the gym and spending the kids' inheritance.
Simon Williams grabbed a quick Q&A with her...
What gave you the inspiration to start writing poetry?
"I had written very small poems years ago, nothing like what I write now. Then after going to University as very mature student I gradually picked up the writing thread again, firstly for a friend's online magazine, then about six years ago started with the poetry. I read other poets' writing on many different real life issues that I had become involved with and knew this was a genre I needed to write more about."
A lot of people think poetry is for posh people. I have seen your show a couple of times and know how good it is. What are the advantages of playing the Manchester Fringe?
"Fringe events like Manchester's are perfect events for previewing and showcasing your work. It worked for me last year as I took that show on to Edinburgh. Also for me the spoken word and comedy scene in Manchester is strong."
Every time I go to see The Moods or JB Barrington it as if everyone who is anyone in Manchester is there, from poets to DJs to bands – what's it like being part of the new Manchester scene?
"There is a strong scene of supporting local bands and also spoken word performers, although I seem to have become an adopted Salfordian. Poetry and music complement each other; my god, just look at what the Sleaford Mods are doing. When I performed at Moston Miners supporting bands like The Moods and Taiser Puppets it was an amazing feeling, seems more and more of this is happening on the scene/ We all have similar things to say in our lyrics and words."
It has been said you're making poetry accessible - was that always your goal , and do you like to think you have inspired others to write?
"I guess not, when I first got serious about writing, but it didn't take me long to realise, through seeing other performers and from my first performances, where and what could be achieved. It would be nice to think that someone who has heard me perform did start to write down their own words and feeling. It's good to hear someone say after an event that they now get it, poetry wise."
