Karl Marx is coming back to his favourite holiday destination of Salford for one night only. Marx used to go out boozing in Salford pubs after a hard day's intellectual graft with his mate Friedrich Engels, so it's fitting that his theatrical incarnation should be staged at the Kings Arms.
The co-writer of the Communist Manifesto and author of Das Kapital returns from his grave at the insistence of God to face his sternest critics and to clear up misunderstandings of his theories in the play Marx in Soho. But instead of returning him to his former address in Soho, London, he is deposited, by accident in Soho, New York the centre of the most advanced capitalist country in the world.
"The play, written by historian Howard Zinn, is an imaginative critique of our society's hypocrisies and injustices and an entertaining portrait of Marx as a voice of humanitarian justice" says Bryan Sullivan who is bringing the production to the Kings Arms
"Zinn wrote the play at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union" he adds "With taunts that Marx was dead and the 'free market' had triumphed ringing in everyone's ears, Zinn wanted to show Marx as 'angry that his theories had been so distorted as to stand for Stalinist cruelties' and was determined 'to rescue Marx from all those writers and politicians in the West who now gloated over the triumph of capitalism' and the end of history.
Directed by Sergio Amigo and starring Danny Kelly as Marx, the play illuminates the varied episodes of Marx's life, including his penchant for a pub crawl.
"Throughout his life he remained an activist and an advocate for the realisation of the human potential" says Bryan "The philosophers responsibility is to not just to make sense of the world but to change it it would be difficult to come away from this play not feeling both moved and entertained."
