Today is World Press Freedom Day, set up by UNESCO in 1991. The Day `celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluates press freedom around the world, defends the media from attacks on its independence and pays tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession'.
Today seems the perfect day to announce that the Salford Star will be out in print again within the next ten days, with 20,000 free copies set to be distributed in cafes, pubs, chippies, community centres, shops and precincts, plus door-to-door in as many areas as possible.
The Salford Star first appeared in print in 2006 and eight issues of the award winning, glossy magazine were produced until late 2008, with issue 9 being online ever since at www.salfordstar.com. Now, after many years of fundraising, fantastic donations from the community and merchandise sales, we are finally able to produce a pilot issue of a new print format Salford Star. If successful the aim is to produce a monthly version of the magazine later this year.
With the demise of the Salford Advertiser and more and more residents being cut off from local news, the Salford Star believes it is vital for democracy that there is an independent free community press within the city, that continuously challenges and holds power to account, gives people a voice and highlights great things going on in the community.
Over the coming week, we will be giving a taster of what to expect in the new Salford Star. In the meantime, if anyone wants to help distribute the magazine door-to-door, or knows of any shops, centres or pubs that can be distribution points please get in touch info@salfordstar.com
