It's a simple idea and it's a stolen idea but Simon Williams, author of the Hidden Depths books (see here) and presenter on Spirit of Soul radio, isn't bothered because his Five Tin Challenge is going viral and is set to help people in poverty this Christmas.
"Basically I got some tins and put them in a bag for the Coffee4Craig appeal, and then nicked the idea from the Ice Bucket Challenge where you nominate people" he says "I've got no shame in admitting that, I'm a proper Salford lad, I changed it around and put a little twist on it. I nominated Coffee4Craig for the tins but it's gone national so outside Salford, people can donate to any local food bank in their area."
Coffee4Craig was set up last year, in memory of 37 year old Craig White who died after living on the streets of Cardiff. The organisation was set up, primarily in Cardiff and Manchester, to support the homeless community and the two ladies who founded the project, Fie and Risha, are from Salford. The project doesn't judge anyone and particularly helps those who are not deemed a top priority by local authorities.
So far, there's been street kitchens, a street store, soup runs, a Christmas night shelter, a Christmas single for sale at £1.99 and links with loads of other charities and organisations supporting the homeless (for full details see the website click here). This latest idea implores people to take photos of their tins, share them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and then nominate three people to do the same.
There are pick up points at the Coffee4Craig HQ at Lancaster House (7-11 Lancaster Road, Salford M6 8AQ), Home and More Furniture Store in Walkden (69-71 Manchester Road East, over the road from McDonald's and next to the New Inn pub) and at Cafe Logos on Langworthy Road (if there are any more please add in the Comments section).
Items the project is looking for include cans of fruit, meat and vegetables, clothes, toiletries, cereals, UHT milk and any instant packet meals. People can also sponsor a bed via Paypal or direct into the Coffee4Craig account (Co-op Bank sort code 08-92-99 account no: 65705476).
There's loads of ways to help but the Five Tin Challenge is a top way to start...
