`Disreputable' Student Gives Testimonial For University

The University of Salford recently drummed out lecturer, union rep and PhD student, Gary Duke for `bringing the University into disrepute' and making "malicious" and "damaging remarks". So what better way to promote the University than to use Gary's testimonial saying that studying there is "stress free and a continuing pleasure"?

Hmmm…

A couple of weeks ago University of Salford lecturer, Gary Duke, was sacked for producing a spoof newsletter which, for the University, amounted to "gross misconduct".  Gary, a UCU union rep who led the protests against job cuts at Salford, also had his PhD suspended for which he'd been studying for years.

"By suspending me as a student and attacking my PhD, they want to take away my right to earn a living as a lecturer in the future" he said "This is particularly vindictive."

It hasn't stopped the University keeping Gary's message on its website of how great the place is for studying PhDs. Ironically, Gary's PhD was looking at "various political challenges to Liberal Democracy"…Ouch!!!

Here's Gary's Testimonial…to be taken with a large pinch of salt…

ESRI - Student Testimonials
"I am currently in my first year and have found the level of academic support to be of a very high standard. Academic resources, the skills and commitment of the teaching and support staff have in fact been vital in making my study at Salford stress-free and a continuing pleasure.

As part of the first year I am taking the core MRes modules which are designed to develop my research skills along with my conceptual understanding of my chosen thesis topic on the various political challenges to Liberal Democracy. I feared these would be dry and dusty modules but have instead found them to be intellectually stimulating and a great help to my own research interests. I look forward eagerly to the next three of hard work!"

Meanwhile, Gary Duke is appealing against his dismissal and the suspension of his PhD…

Aw they just took Gary's testimonial off the site - nice to know they read my page though!

Gary Duke is a 'Herbert'of the highest order and Richard Carvath needs to get out more. As for either of them being members of SM&WOI club. he is referring to Salford Men and Women Of Influence - something he has just made up in his goldfish brain! Maybe they should both be members of the SM&WUTI club...It is cryptic I know but work it out :-)

Gary Duke should be reinstated at once with a full apology. What the chuff are the big nobs at the Uni thinking... a political academic can't write satirical political literature in Salford of all places!! Salford's a centre of political satire isn't it? I hope Duke is reinstated, but if not he should know he's in very good company with the other political 'bad boys' in Salford and a member of a very exclusive Salford Club (SM&WOI).

SALFORD COUNCIL COURT COSTS

Star date: 7th September 2010

THE QUEEN CHASES SALFORD COUNCIL FOR OVER £500,000

Never mind the summons for your Council Tax, Salford City Council itself is now being chased by `Her Majesty's Court Services' for over half a million quid it owes for five year's rent and stuff on Bexley Square, site of the old Salford Town Hall and now the city's main courthouse.

As Salford Council tries to stop Her Maj merging its courts with Manchester following the no-show of the new Eccles court building, there's the little matter of the £578,468 bill to settle – or the Council could find itself in the court rather than fighting for its survival.

HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SCANDAL

Star date: 6th September 2010

REPORT RECOMMENDING HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SHOULD STAY OPEN WAS `IGNORED' AND CONSULTATION WAS `BIASED'

An official report recommending that Hope Hospital's Maternity Unit should stay open was "ignored" and there was "a clear indication of bias" in the consultation proceedings, according to a new document produced by midwives.

The document states that "there was never a chance of maternity and neonatal services being retained at Hope, from the very start of the consultation process". And, as a result of population increase, it adds, "We judge that the new unit at St Mary's will be barely able to meet the needs of its own population let alone that of Salford…"

Hundreds of people wearing Born In Salford t-shirts gathered in Buile Hill Park on Saturday to show opposition to plans to shut down the Maternity Unit at Hope Hospital, now called Salford Royal.

Backed by Ryan Giggs, Mike Sweeney, John Thompson and Salford Reds, the campaign is gathering renewed momentum as pressure mounts on the new government to reverse the decision to close Salford's baby unit.
