Away from the big name, big gesture events to raise money for Alan Henning's family, the talent showcase in St James Church, Higher Broughton, last night was a very local, small scale tribute as loads of acts performed under a giant portrait of the Salford taxi driver murdered in the Middle East.
Performances ranged from the stomping garage rock of Operation Detonation, to the foot tapping harmonica playing of Ray, to some superb, soulful singing from Clarice Herring, Lazarette, Becca Finch and Carly Wilson.
Meanwhile, May Aston, who's been singing for fifty years, wowed the audience with Words, Lisa Minshall's Amazing Grace echoed around the Church and Lil Sharls strutted her rap around the alter.
There were acoustic sets from Johnny Turner, James Kelly and, er, Acoustic John, plus dance from Tanya Davies, an electronic song from Jacob, some home grown Lower Broughton rap from Stephen Miller and a two song set from Insignia.
"I think it's been a brilliant night with lots of local acts, and everyone's worked really hard" said Dave Fraser of organisers Salford Involved who was also mad compare for the night.
"It's for Alan Henning's family and we've had £84 in donations and are hoping for a bit more which will go straight to the family and charity" he added "There are so many people who would make this world about anger and hate but this evening we've shown it's about talent, it's about creativity and it's about generosity of spirit."
