SALFORD COUNCIL PROPOSING 3% INCREASE IN COUNCIL TAX FOR POOREST IN CITY

Since April 2013, Salford Council has made everyone in the city of working age pay at least 12% of their Council Tax bill, no matter how low their income. From April 2015 it is aiming to increase this to 15%, a rise of 3%, above inflation and above any rises in benefit payments. The Council is blaming the ConDem Government for the rise, arguing "Because government funding has reduced further, the current Council Tax Reduction scheme is no longer affordable." The 3% rise has been calculated on the Council's website, with various examples of how much extra people might have to pay, but adds "This is based on council tax charges for 2014 to 2015, these details may change if council tax bills increase for 2015 to 2016". The Council is consulting on the proposal until 8th December, and there is only one question that it asks (apart from a load of questions about who you are etc)... "In the light of a further reduction in government funding do you agree that it is fair that working age people who qualify for support should pay a minimum contribution of 15% towards their council tax bill from 1 April 2015?" | what reason does salford council need to raise the tax ? its their bad management thats the reason they got no money maybe if they checked their wages and realise 75 to 150 grand a year is too much and if they think we can survive put them on our wages get rid of company vehicles and all the free benefits they get i would not oppose the rise if they lived on my wages bad management salford council wheres the decency in penalizing the poor JC says a decent place for decent folk to live well this is a labour run council give up your company cars and allowences |

| I believe that in law (common law), the failure to default on a debt or in this case poll tax, is not a criminal offence, ergo what law has been broken.... people who fall behind with the poll tax payments and receive a letter from the council demanding payment or court action, should phone the council and ask if the letter has been layed before the court, the answer will be no and therefore the letter/ summons is not legal ergo not enforceable by any bailiffs or police.
I would suggest that if anyone falls behind with poll tax payments or indeed any type of repayments, which could be credit cards etc dont leave it be.Contact them straight away and make an offer of payment by law this must considered and will keep the bailiffs away.... remember failure to pay a debt, rent arrears, or rent is

| What is wrong with this council? If you are already on a low income and eligible to receive a 12% reduction how on earth are you expected to find money to pay another 3%. People are just going to end up poorer than they already are. There is absolutely no logic to the increase-wages aren't rising, in work benefits aren't increasing-where are they supposed to get the money to pay the increase, magic it out of thin air? It is a gutless ploy by those in charge who should know better. Raising the threshold will only cause further distress and anguish to the poorest and weakest of our neighbours. Why don't the gutless supposedly elected representatives of this City do the decent thing and table a motion to reject the proposal and make savings by ceasing the frenetic policy of plugging the financial funding gap of every private business chancer that comes knocking on Salford's door |

Until Labour ward councillors start addressing the needs of their ward constituents they should not be given any more power to inflict even more misery on us, already we are effectively in the grip of a SCC dictatorship. Just for the record-I don't want my CT increased, I don't want my taxes syphoned off to fill the coffers of Peel Holdings or to grease the palm of millionaire stadium owners, I don't want to supplement profits for private developers or venture capitalists. I don't want to listen to the constant bleating that its the other parties fault. I don't want my Cllr to be part of a clique that rules without honour...lets see if any councillors have the guts to block the CT increase |

| We the public are getting less and less from this council. The 3% rise is obviously to pay for the many assistant mayors this city has and do not need. How about cutting 3% from their allowances?? |

| While Cllr David Lancaster can milk the people of Salford to the sum of almost £50k has the cheek in his 2012/13 expenses claim to charge us £7 for travel/subsistence costs I totally object to paying any more council tax for the very basic of services |

| Salford reds must want to buy another player or salford labour councillors food and bar bill must have gone up at the reds stadium. Let me get this right this labour council is cutting services and the bill gets bigger, time we had a proper audit of this councils finances, let's see what money is comming in and what is going out and more importantly who's it's going out to, peel, salford reds, what we need in this country is a national council anti corruption team where local people can report there council for dodgy practices. |

It makes it look like what residents think will make ANY difference to the outcome!!
