Star date: 21st September 2014

VOLUNTEERS SET TO WORK ON JAM BUTTY CAMP

Following this year's successful campaign to keep Salford Children's `Jam Butty' Camp open for future generations of Salfordians, this week a gang of volunteers began the clean-up of the Prestatyn complex.

Despite Salford Council withdrawing £50,000 from the Camp, local people are ensuring its going to be better than ever...

Last Thursday a gang of volunteers landed at the Salford Children's `Jam Butty' Camp to have a clean-up day – a great start in the quest to revitalise the Camp after Salford City Council withdrew £50,000 of funding, forcing the kids' holiday complex in Prestatyn almost to the point of extinction.

Earlier this year here was a massive backlash to the Council cut, which would have forced the closure of the Camp and the land to be sold off. The Council and Trustees would have got away with it – if it wasn't for those pesky ex-Jam Butty Camp kids who fought for its survival, exposing some baddies along the way (see previous Salford Star articles – click here and click here).

Thanks to a brilliant campaign – which even hijacked the Mayor's Spirit of Salford Day (see here) – and the generosity and dedication of local people and businesses, the Camp was saved and is now set for a bright new future.

It began this week with the clean-up day, where Salford people joined with the Prestatyn volunteers who were already on the job ...

"The sun was out, we had a great day at the Camp and also the beach section that the camp gate opens onto" says Paul Blain, one of the volunteers.

The Salford Star will be featuring the Camp as its makeover progresses. Watch this space...

These clean up dates need to be promoted on the star website, lots of willing volunteers on here I am sure some will have caravans in North wales which they visit frequently. I was in North wales myself that week on holiday but if i'd have known then 1 day would have been spent grafting at the camp.

It's been worth every second being there, there's so many others who volunteers behind the Scenes and credit goes to them all in Prestayn and at home here in Salford and to Nick Abbott for driving this forward. The commitment has been amazing and it Just shows you that we all have a caring heart to benifit the children of Salford... Salford Children's Holiday Camp is Back !!!!

Excellent work. I urge Mayor Stewart to promise he will find sponsorship funding next year as a tribute to the work of Salford volunteers. Salford Council should respect the many local people seen supporting the Jam Butty Camp definition of social uniqueness.

Don't forget that the local Prestatyn volunteers also have been cleaning the camp for the past few weeks. Working together Salford and Prestatyn will ensure a wonderful opening in 2015.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
