Yesterday at the High Court, a hearing took place to ensure that Salford Council reinstates its special needs transport arrangements while a legal challenge to its cuts was ongoing.
Lawyers from Irwin Mitchell, representing Michael Robson, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, have launched a case for a judicial review into Salford Council's decision to axe the service. While the process is ongoing the Council has to keep the full service running, despite telling 94 families recently that the service would stop last Friday.
The court was told yesterday that any of the 94 families who have not so far appealed the Council's decision to withdraw their transport can now do so and have their transport reinstated – provided they appeal in writing no later than 4pm on Thursday 11th September.
At court, Salford Council was asked to hand over a list of the contacts for the 94 families, either to Michael Robson's solicitor or to an independent trade union representative who would inform them of their new rights. Salford Council refused to do this, so now a city wide appeal has been launched to find the families and get them to fill in an appeal form.
As a result of last night's Salford Star article, two people have already been in contact asking for the form and now it's hoped that more families will come forward to claim their rights.
"Anyone wishing to have the transport service reinstated needs to send an appeal to the Council outlining why they did not appeal previously and why alternative arrangements are unsuitable" says Mathieu Culverhouse from Irwin Mitchell "With the key issue being that the deadline for requests is 4pm next Thursday, September 11th."
Any appeals need to be sent in writing either by email to philip.marsland@salford.gov.uk or by post to St George's Resource Centre, Cromwell Road, Salford M6 6SB and received by Mr Marsland no later than 4pm on Thursday 11 September 2014.
