MARY BURNS - HAZEL BLEARS SOLVES POVERTY

Superhazel is now going to solve all our problems…

Poor Hazel's digging a deeper hole every time she opens her gob. Today she's launching a new document "supporting those communities where the most severe poverty…persists."

Obviously not her tv room then.

Hazel Blears has today launched Transforming Places: Changing Lives - a "new framework for regeneration that will help the sector through the downturn"

…First of all we have to ask `Which sector is this?'  Will that be the regeneration sector where everyone works on huge salaries chucking public money at developers who have taken the wads and stuck up a few shoddy houses that no-one can afford? And who then go back cap in hand to Hazel pleading to be baled out?

Hazel in her speech to the British Urban Regeneration Association`confirmed the planned £6.5bn investment in regeneration across the country over the next two years in reflection of this priority'.

She adds "Over the last ten years we have shown we can make a difference with many areas turned around because of the commitment we have shown and record investment we have made"…Not on your own doorstep, Hazel. The figures haven't moved – see our `jam tomorrow feature'….

Regeneration, Hazel says, is now to be judged against three new success measures

1) `improving economic performance' – don't pay Capital Gains Tax?
2) `creating the right conditions for business growth' - become an MP and Cabinet minister?
3) `creating places that people want to live' – buy a flat in Kennington and flog it for a profit after claiming allowances?

Sorry Hazel, we all want more regeneration money but handing it out to the same speculators and losers who messed it up last time is no answer. Come up with proper ideas – if you're still there in a few weeks time.

PS. Can we have some funds for Salford Star?

SALFORD COUNCIL COURT COSTS

Star date: 7th September 2010

THE QUEEN CHASES SALFORD COUNCIL FOR OVER £500,000

Never mind the summons for your Council Tax, Salford City Council itself is now being chased by `Her Majesty's Court Services' for over half a million quid it owes for five year's rent and stuff on Bexley Square, site of the old Salford Town Hall and now the city's main courthouse.

As Salford Council tries to stop Her Maj merging its courts with Manchester following the no-show of the new Eccles court building, there's the little matter of the £578,468 bill to settle – or the Council could find itself in the court rather than fighting for its survival.

HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SCANDAL

Star date: 6th September 2010

REPORT RECOMMENDING HOPE MATERNITY UNIT SHOULD STAY OPEN WAS `IGNORED' AND CONSULTATION WAS `BIASED'

An official report recommending that Hope Hospital's Maternity Unit should stay open was "ignored" and there was "a clear indication of bias" in the consultation proceedings, according to a new document produced by midwives.

The document states that "there was never a chance of maternity and neonatal services being retained at Hope, from the very start of the consultation process". And, as a result of population increase, it adds, "We judge that the new unit at St Mary's will be barely able to meet the needs of its own population let alone that of Salford…"

Hundreds of people wearing Born In Salford t-shirts gathered in Buile Hill Park on Saturday to show opposition to plans to shut down the Maternity Unit at Hope Hospital, now called Salford Royal.

Backed by Ryan Giggs, Mike Sweeney, John Thompson and Salford Reds, the campaign is gathering renewed momentum as pressure mounts on the new government to reverse the decision to close Salford's baby unit.
