SALFORD STAR EDITOR NAMED IN NCTJ LIST OF MOST RESPECTED JOURNALISTS IN UK

Star date: 13th October 2018

KATE ADIE...JOHN PILGER...ER...STEPHEN KINGSTON?

Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, has been named in a list of the most respected journalists in the country, as nominated by fellow working writers in the NCTJ's Journalists at Work 2018 survey. The 238-strong list also includes legends like John Pilger, Kate Adie and Jeremy Paxman...

"It's a huge honour but unfortunately you can't eat a list" says Star editor Stephen Kingston "The Salford Star is out of money at the end of November and is in danger of shutting down. So if anyone's got a job going as a Christmas elf or wants some leaves sweeping, let us know."

This week, the National Council for the Training of Journalists, or NCTJ, published a list of the most respected journalists in the country, as nominated by fellow working journalists.

They were asked to name 'which journalist they felt most embodies the values of journalism that they respect and adhere to', and the 238-strong final list includes Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, together with total media legends like Kate Adie, John Pilger, Jeremy Paxman, Louis Theroux and John Humphrys, as well as lesser known writers, including Dan Grimmer from the Eastern Daily Press, Paul Rowland of Wales Online and Jennifer Williams from the Manchester Evening News.

"Journalists see colleagues all around them whose commitment to the right values they admire and respect" says Ian Hargreaves, professor of digital economy at Cardiff University, who chaired the Journalists at Work research, from which the list originated.

"What's striking is that the range of individual journalists who embody these values is so broad and so varied" he adds "This suggests to me that values-based journalism is thriving in these turbulent times. An outcome where one or two individuals wholly dominated the voting might have indicated the opposite: that such qualities are admirable but rare."

'Value-based journalism' might well be thriving but no-one wants to pay for it and the Salford Star, after 13 years and over 5,000 articles, is about to shut down...

"It's a huge honour but unfortunately you can't eat a list" says Star editor Stephen Kingston "The Salford Star is out of money at the end of November and is in danger of shutting down. So if anyone's got a job going as a Christmas elf or wants some leaves sweeping, let us know."

The Salford community is rallying to try and save the Star, with 13 local bands donating tracks for a benefit CD produced by the Sounds of Salford radio titled All Materials of Value Have Been Removed, named after the stencil sprayed on soon-to-be-demolished houses by Salford City Council.

After launching the CD this month, people from all over the country have responded with orders and donations, and there are more huge events planned in the near future to try and save the award-winning community-centred magazine and daily online news site...

Ideally the Salford Star would be self funding if it could get enough advertising in. It would be great if it could get out in print again and be published monthly. Sadly, it wont happen anytime soon. Funding could be found for it by the council and they could save themselves a few quid in the process with public notices and the like. How much were they paying for that "life" magazine? The Salford Star cannot get funding because it prints stories about negative things that go on it the city, rather than just rolling over and having it's tummy tickled like other publications. If the Star was putting out stories about how great the city is and what a wonderful job the coucil are doing on behalf of us, I am sure funding would be found. However, integrity of the Star means that this wont happen.

you have to love the hypocrisy of the left. You have nothing positive to say about capitalism, but want others to put their hands in their pockets to sponsor you/keep you going.

Come On Salford, let's hear it for the Star, time to support the grassroots ! Who was there on Barton Moss as we kicked the frackers out of town ? Who was there covering the "Save The Cranes" campaign while other so-called journalists rolled past them on the tram every day turning a blind eye ? Who was there covering the concreting over of wildlife habitat for the so-called "Media City" ? Who is there every day covering the real issues of the working class of Salford ? Answer: The Salford Star

Appearing alongside Laura Kuenssberg in a list of "respected journalists" is a bit like being in a selection of politicians with integrity which includes Donald Trump.

Well deserved recognition. What a pity the Salford Council doesn't see it the same! This newspaper tells its readers the truth, the truth and nothing but the truth! Stephen Kingston is a dedicated and intelligent journalist, who works with integrity and concern for the underdog. If it closes we will lose a valuable Salford asset. It is not exaggerating to say it is on its death bed. We need a sponsor or better still, every Salford resident could pop a £ in our box and we could keep going. That would be real community support. I am the Treasurer and I know the state of our bank. Watch for the buckets about to go around Salford. If you want a collecting box please contact me on this email: aosearle@gmail.com Many thanks. Let's keep it going for Salford!

This reflects very badly on Salford council. They have a respected, award winning journalist in their doorstep and refuse him and the publication and funding. Even worse they refuse to deal with the Salford Star at all. If they had any sense it would be a rent free office at media city and some basic funding.

Well done Stephen and thanx for keeping Salfords' name up there in the headlines and in peoples minds .... Now perhaps certain people who always cringe when they hear mention of the name of Steve Kingston or the name Salford Star will stop behaving like kids and get behind OUR paper.... l will certainly be pushing the CD ( which, by the way gets 10/10 off me and passengers in my car ) plus any other way of raising funds, profiles , and support for the second peoples paper after the Morning Star.....WELL DONE to all supporters

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
