With pubs and social clubs shutting all over the place, and internet dating a scary proposition for some, the big question in Salford these days is `Where do you go to meet people?'

Peppermint Lounge, which opened this week at the Ice Bar, ISIS Restaurant on Bolton Road, aims to fill this gap for those over thirty, and is believed to be the only regular singles night in the city.

Happening every Wednesday, from 8pm, there's a relaxed atmosphere and a warm welcome from organisers who are attempting to create something special.

"If you come to a place like this you can actually go and chat to somebody because you know what they are there for, whereas if you're in the pub and they're with their mates it's like `Don't bother'" says Annette Wainwright "Here you just get talking to people and women can get dressed up."

And fellow organiser, Norma Parkinson-Green, explains that the Ice Bar is the perfect place for it...

"You feel welcome the minute you walk through the door as all the management and staff are fabulous, the atmosphere is lovely and there's a dancefloor" she says "We have started Peppermint Lounge off the back of the Rendezvous which was in Astley, and had been going for 19 years until Fred Done closed it for flats. We've tried a number of other places and not liked them, so we're hoping that a lot of people come here."

Norma explains that, as well as Salford singles, they have love hunters coming from all over Greater Manchester "because there's nothing in their areas" and ISIS even has bedrooms if anyone wants to stay over. Officially opened this week by Simon Williams, of Sounds of Salford Radio, at the first event there were lots of people grateful for new potentially romantic opportunities...

"I've come tonight as there's not many places out there to actually meet new people and there's quite a lot of us who need this" says Don Elias who has come to Peppermint Lounge for the first time.

"The pub is probably the worst place to meet someone and this kind of event is all organised and everyone's in the same boat" he adds "Everyone's single and everyone's here wanting to meet people or trying to make a relationship. It's dress up, come in and hopefully meet somebody..."

Just wondering about the age range. Would this very good sounding venture be suitable for people over 65.

I welcome the new idea. Although happy partnered for 35 years I know many who deserve to find a loving security. On similar note I want each Council to have access to the new Metro Mayor big £2billion budget for each ward to build 80 quality apartments for ex-service people, making a total 8000 homes across Greater Manchester available to these great champions of UK security.

I'm having second thoughts about my support for Donald Trump, why would he want to destroy ISIS when they do such wonderful work in the community?

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
