Local media turned up to a Salford City away game for the first time ever, hoping to catch a glimpse of Manchester United's Class of '92 consortium which officially announced it was taking over the Ammies this week. While Giggs, Neville, Butt and Scholes were a no show today, it was on the pitch that Salford City made headlines, hammering play-off hopefuls Farsley 3-2.
At first it looked like a very different result was on the cards, Farsley taking the lead after only three minutes, when Smith, Salford's umpteenth keeper this year, saved a point blank effort only for a Farsley striker to poke in the re-bound. 0-1.
Obviously inspired by the eyes of the red world gawping their way, Ammies players battled hard to get back into the game and, after 19 minutes, Rob Kinsella rose gloriously above the Farsley defence to power in a header from Chris Williams' pinpoint corner. 1-1.
Williams was involved in Salford's next attack, bringing a top save from the Farsley keeper, while Stuart Cook whistled a shot just over the bar with the interval approaching. Half time 1-1.
Farsley came back at the Ammies in the early stages of the second half but it was the tangerines who took the lead, a Farsley defender slicing a Williams cross into his own goal. 2-1.
Freshly inspired, Salford tore into Farsley with a wicked two minute spell, Matty Purcell driving through into the six yard box forcing the keeper into a desperate save and a minute later latching on to a superb Stuart Cook through ball with a carbon copy effort. This time, as the keeper parried, Jamie Rother was on hand to hammer the ball home to make it 3-1.
Now it was Farsley's turn to put on the pressure, winning a succession of corners and free kicks, admirably dealt with by the Salford defence, with Aaron Walters and Warren Gaskin again outstanding at the back. But battling Salford were tiring and, with twenty minutes left, Farsley got themselves back into the game with a header that deceived the Salford keeper. 3-2.
The Yorkshire team huffed and puffed but produced nothing of note as Salford sat back, coped with the Farsley attack and could have increased the lead with a couple of counter breaks. In the end it was a welcome win on the pitch for the Ammies, following the Class of '92 takeover.
As the media has focussed on Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes et al this week, it was hard to see that behind the hype there was a real team and real supporters already in place. At the final whistle, the fans clapped the team and the team clapped the fans. It seemed that both had almost had enough of some of the patronising drivel that's been spewed by the mainstream media this week.
Salford City FC already has a great manager and some great, committed players… `We are tangerine…We are tangerine!' was the chant at the end, a response to any future bid to change the club's colours – and also an attempt to cling to the Ammies' current identity…
