Following reports at the beginning of February that Manchester United's Class of '92 were about to buy into Salford City FC (see previous Salford Star article – click here), four of the consortium turned up at Moor Lane this afternoon to see the mighty Ammies.
Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes stood behind the goal in anoraks, hoods and bobble hats trying to remain inconspicuous but were soon recognised as children and Salford fans lined up to have their photos taken with them; although they declined an interview with the Salford Star.
Unfortunately the foursome saw one of the most dour games of the season, as Salford were totally ring rusty, having not played a competitive match for a month due to postponements.
Fielding two new players, with more on the bench, Salford lost the initiative after only six minutes when the referee awarded a free kick outside the area. He pushed the wall back a million yards, making it easy for the Curzon kicker to whip the ball into the area. As a Hydra of heads tried to get to it, the ball flew off an Ammies defender into the net for an own goal. 0-1.
The rest of the half proved scrappy, Salford only putting together some good moves near the break but applying no credible shots. And Curzon, for all their endeavours were not much better.
The second half proved even more dour than before the interval, Curzon knocking the ball about, Salford huffing and puffing without managing a dangerous effort on target. The end came when Curzon were awarded a soft penalty, gleefully converted for a two goal lead. 0-2.
With twenty minutes left on the clock, the Class of '92 had seen enough and left to choruses of `We can see you sneaking out'.
The foursome chose the wrong day to watch an out of sorts Salford City. But it couldn't have been worse than watching United in Europe last week...
Next up for Salford City is an away trip to in-form Ossett Town on Tuesday night.
