Young Once are an act I've seen live many times. Admittedly, I have a tenuous connection to the band. Their line-up includes a family connection, my ex-school teacher and (interestingly) an original member of the Buzzcocks...
They are a classic vocal harmony group that deliver great tunes from the 50s to the present day. Add to that, the sets are interspersed with comedy. Their repertoire features many of the all time greats including The Beatles, Tom Jones, The Rolling Stones and Oasis.
I spoke to Tony to ask how Young Once differs from his previous bands; "I've never planned it, but most bands I've played in since I was 18 have been 'cabaret' style acts where there has been a combination of great vocal harmony songs, and a comedian in the troupe" he explained "The boys in Young Once tell me that comedy isn't my forte though! I'm on stage to sound great and look pretty!
"The only real change is that although I've played in bands for a loooong time, Young Once is the only band where I've been 'the' lead singer" he added "It took me an age to convince myself I was good enough."
Traditional folk songs like The Leaving of Liverpool and Dirty Old Town are favourites along with Northern Soul classics. Their sets also include more contemporary pop songs from current musicians, like Ed Sheeran and The Killers, as well as comedic, local based songs of their own composition.
Guitar player and vocalist Pete uses the gaps in between to do jokes..."On or off stage, Pete is a very funny and comical character - he's full of them" said Tony "Coming from a teaching background he's always revelled in, one of his many skills, public speaking. From day one he's put that skill to good use with his combination of quirky jokes and satirical commentary on what's happening in the world today."
Young Once is the perfect act for anyone in need of a fun night out. They also have a genuine, founder member of the punk scene in their rank. The seminal Sex Pistols gigs were arranged by the Buzzcocks, who also played both gigs at The Free Trade Hall.
I asked Tony if the band had ever been tempted to do a Buzzcocks cover? "Yes, but it's not happened yet. Generally, our audience would find a Buzzcocks song out of sorts with the kind of material we play - we should sit down and 'adapt' one to our style of playing. Occasionally at rehearsals, and informal pub sessions, I strike up my favourite - Ever Fallen in Love. Garth swings into action like it was yesterday, harmonies and everything - it's fantastic."
