SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 12

THE JESTERS OF THE YEAR AWARD

This award goes to those who, in the heat of hostility and battle, can keep a sense of humour…Those who wouldn't throw their dummy out of the pram and start looking for revenge at the first sign of a slagging off…Those who don't take themselves too seriously, especially when they get their own way…

Like, yeah…has anyone ever met anyone in a suit with a sense of humour?

Ladies and Gentlemen. The JESTERS OF THE YEAR AWARD…goes to…

Please do a drum roll and click here…

THE VICE CHANCELLORS AND REGISTRAR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD

Back in August Salford University lecturer, Gary Duke, was sacked for `bringing the University into disrepute' after producing a spoof `Vice Consul's Newsletter'.

Gary, a trade union rep, had been leading the fight against course closures and over 100 job losses announced by the University. He brought out a few issues of the satirical newsletter sending up the bosses. Unfortunately, Adrian Graves, the Registrar, and Vice Chancellors, Michael Harloe (who has since retired, although he's still haunting the Salford's regeneration body) and new-in-post Martin Hall didn't see the funny side.

Gary was dragged before a disciplinary hearing and sacked for "gross misconduct" and "bringing the University into disrepute". Many believed that the University had brought itself into disrepute by the way it treated Gary Duke and its loyal, now redundant, staff.

With all the sense of humour of the bastard offspring of Kenny Dalglish mated with a tennis racquet, the University of Salford is well deserving of this MARY.

Ladies and Gentlemen.  Put on your red noses and pull your tongues out at the JESTERS OF THE YEAR…

COUNCIL BLOCKS FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST ON £4,000 MIPIM TRIP

Salford City Council has refused to answer a Salford Star Freedom of Information request on which private company paid the £4,022 costs for City Mayor Paul Dennett and two staff to go to the South of France for the MIPIM property event.

The Council states that "the commercial interests of the Council outweigh that of the public interest in disclosure". The Salford Star is to appeal the decision.

DEVASTATING SURVEY OF NORTH WEST COUNCIL WORKERS SHOWS LOCAL SERVICES COLLAPSING

Star date: 18th June 2018

OVER 80% OF COUNCIL WORKERS HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN SERVICES AND ALMOST 50% THINKING OF LEAVING THEIR JOBS

A survey of almost 1,500 local council workers in the North West reveals that 81% have no confidence in the future of local services, 49% are thinking of leaving their jobs, 54% believe their council no longer delivers quality services, and 45% think that their employer doesn't make the right decisions for the public.

The other results of the survey by UNISON to coincide with its local government conference make equally depressing reading, as the union states that "Vital local services in the North West are collapsing".

There's free massages, trips out, advice on allowances, tea and coffee and cakes, but, most importantly, relaxed informal chats with carers who are all in the same position.
